The Yorkie Who Won't... Won't potty INSIDE, that is. (Yeah, I can imagine everyone is thinking, "HUH??") Jenna is about 2-3 years old. Today it was so cold when I took her for her daily, she may have just gone #1 AND #2 at the same time! (Never seen a dog do this!) Then she just sat down and shivered until I picked her up and brought her inside. I couldn't really see a lot of pee, but it's 8 inches of snow and then forest floor, not much chance I'll even be able to find a stain.... So I've done everything to prepare for the dreaded subzero that I know is coming to Alaska...puppy pads, litter for dogs and dog box, potty pad, 'samples' (eeeewww)....maybe I'll even get one of those 'potty bricks' that is supposed to be scented to encourage them to go where you put them. But Jenna always fixes me with this stinkeye that says, "Seriously? You want me to go WHERE? ARE YOU NUTS??" I think she even doesn't understand people in the bathroom. She'll come in and sniff and then look at us like we're crazy to be doing that inside the house. I have a feeling I am going to be doing a lot of carpet cleaning over the coldest months. Right now she's got a stubborn ear infection and you can see she's not thrilled that some bugger has lowered her lovely outdoor temps to unbearable. (she'd like me to do something about that) Not like I haven't had to do this before. We've had older dogs who needed help indoors and we've got three cats who don't always aim quite right...plus three house bunnies I have to clean pans for...but still. I'm just worried that one accident will mean MANY in the future. And the few that Jenna had when she first got to us, well, you could see she was so ashamed. She had me trained within a week to get her out on time. But my other worry is that she'll hold herself until someone takes her outside no matter what the weather. Has anyone seen their dog do that? I'd be afraid she'd float a kidney or hurt her bowels. This is going to sound like a stupid question, but.... Will even a well trained Yorkie eventually just GO on the carpet if it's not taken outside? And if so, at her age, do I have much hope of training her to the appropriate place again...indoors or out? |
Look up grid systems... that's what I use, I'm not sure how hard it is train them to go on it once they know how to go outside, but that may work better than the pads. it's what I use. UGO Dog and WizDog are two examples but you can make one from a shoe tray and grid rubber mats. it's always worth a try. I know that if you train a dog to go on the grid, it's easy to get them to go outside, but like I said I'm not sure if the opposite way works... if not what about trying one of those grass patches. |
I don't live in Alaska but have been wondering how I was going to get my girl to use an indoor potty. She only will go outside also. I set up a place in my garage with puppy pads and she will not use it. I read somewhere that using a piece of sod over a puppy pad may help. The idea is to make it smaller and smaller over time and eventually taking it away all together. Haven't tried it, actually wondering where to get a piece of sod... |
won't go????? well i don't live in Alaska either in fact i live in Texas 5 minutes away from the border to mexico so believe me when i say it's super hot down here. well back to my point. my bella is 1 yr old and is trained to go outside as well. so i was so excited when i bought her the potty patch and silly me i actually thought she would use it, and for a moment there i can actually say that i know what you mean when your dog gives you that look! like where do you want me to go again??? she was even scared to get on it at first. little by little i got her use to walking on it by giving her some treats on it until she started sitting on the grass, then i took the potty patch outside but nothing. i was so frustrated that nothing was working! i even went as far as buying that spray that helps them go and did it work?? FAT CHANCE!! she would lay on the grass and even play on it , but never went potty on it!!!! i bought it because there were times when i wasn't home and i felt bad not being able to take her outside.it was just for emergency's but one day i noticed she was going on my daughters tinker bell carpet so i decided to move the potty patch to my daughters room and put it in the same place she had gone before, and guess what?????? SHE WENT!!!! she used the potty patch, and how do i know you say well i decided to put an under pad and when i lifted the grass she had stained it. so so far she has used it once or twice but it's a work in progress just thought you would like to know my experience. |
A dear friend of mine adopted 2 yorkies from a rescue, both 9 years old in Sept., they were both outdoor trained which was not feasible for her as she lives on the 20th floor in a condo in Boston. I suggested a potty patch, they did not like wee wee pads, thought they were for tug-o-war,lol. After a week it was smooth sailing. Hope you give it a try. The $40 1 works just as well as the expensive ones. |
