Question about training a puppy Ok..this might sound a little crazy..but how did you train your puppy the sit, stay and come command? Did you take the puppy to classes or just taught them it yourself? Thanks ahead of time! :aimeeyork |
Well with Denali we had already started teaching him sit and some other commands before hand, but we put him through puppy class at Petsmart so that reinforced sit, as well as stay and come and all the other commands. The class was really great for him and he loves our trainer so it's turned out great. |
Miles learned to sit and lay down in one afternoon. After that, it was just making him do it often enough that he wouldn't forget! I got some treats and chopped them up into tiny little bits, sat on the floor with him and began training. I started with sit: Say the word "sit" (and ONLY the word "sit), then gently put him into the sit position. Once he sat, I praised him like crazy with "good sit!!!" and gave him a treat. I did this over and over and over again. I would say after about ten rounds of making him "sit", he was catching on. Same with lay down (used the command "down"). We did this ALL afternoon. Puppies pick things up pretty quickly...I think you'll be surprised. Good luck! |

Great link Yorkieusa! Keep a bag of treats on hand!!! :D |
I had my puppy for 3 weeks before we started puppy class at Petsmart. During that time I taught him how to sit, down, come, crawl, shake both right and left paws(he knows which paw I'm asking for), turn or spin and sit pretty. I learned hot to teach him by watching a lot of "how to" videos on youtube. I'm in the process of training on how to go do #1 and #2 on command when we go outside instead of waiting for him to find the right spot since sometimes that can take up to 15 min. |
