Praise or punishment - 90 seconds? Hi, I am here to study up as I am having some issues with housetraining my two 1.5 year old adopted Yorkies. once I have studied everything, I will have some questions. For now, it is accepted that you only have 90 seconds to praise or scold a dog? (as it says on the Sticky document). If ths is true, then there is basically no recourse if you were to find an accident site in your house. Correct? So if you find an accident, you just clean it up and move on? (more motivated I suppose). Thanks |
That's pretty much it. If you find an accident a half an hour later and you reprimand your pup - he will not know what you are punishing him for. So basically just clean it up and try to keep an eye on him - ALL THE TIME. When you catch him doing it wrong you just clap your hands real loud, stomp your foot and firmly say NO - all at the same time. You pick him up, bring him to where he wants to go and wait............and wait.................and wait. I've had situations where they then just decide they don't want to go anymore. Of course, lots of praise and treats when they go in the right spot. The tiny goldfishes my kids eat, worked great for me as treats - I always had them in the house. As for cleaning up the mess when you find it. First put the puppy away - do not let him see you cleaning it up. When you are down on the ground on all fours - the puppy assumes that you are down there to play - and will most likely pee there again in order to get you to get down there. Always use a cleaner that will clean up all the scent so that the dog does not go back there again. Good luck to you. |
"you people" (haha) are sooo smart! I remember when I first adopted, I posted here and got so many brilliant tips. I should have come back around sooner. Yes, if I stop my dog from messing off-pad, he will stop going altogether. I am digesting all the info here on this site, (I see now, that the cleaning thing was discussed in the commandments thread) and hopefully will come back with intelligent questions. Interesting that they shouldn't see you on all 4's cleaning it up. There was a time, when I would have said, PLEASE just let me puppies get along, and I will never ask for anything again. Thanks to some patience and great advice I received here, they have become good friends. Now for the next part. |
