Wont potty in the dark... Reese has recently become horrified of going out in the grass when it is dark, I have to pick her up and set her out in it and then she just pulls her ears back and sits there and will not move. I have tried walking a distance from her and calling her to me, tugging at her leash, walking around slowly hoping that she will follow, bribing her with treats...nothing works, she just sits there with a scared look on her face shaking :( Tonight when I took her out I tugged very gently at her leash and she started to cry. She isn't going potty inside and she isn't going at night or in the morning because she is scared to go out in the dark, and she is staying with a friend during the day who informed me that she is only going maybe once or twice when she is with her...what should I do??? |
The first thing that comes to mind for me is having her eyes checked. I know in IGs there is PRA and it starts to present as night blindness first. If there isn't anything wrong with her eyes, or you don't think there is, try making going out to the grass at night something special. Get super yummy treats, like chicken, something better than usual and just for going out at night. Don't even mention going potty, try to get her excited and happy about the treats as you go out or right before and when you get her outside in the grass, praise her, tell her what a super puppy she is and give her good back scratches and the treats of course. Hopefully, you can make going out a fun thing and get her over her fear. Then get her to potty outside. ;) |
I don't think there's anything wrong with her eyes, I will try the special treats and if that doesn't work I will get her checked out. I feel so mean dragging her out in the dark when she gets so scared :( |
We have a sensor light in our backyard so Indy can see where she's going, and we can see her at night. Would something like that work for you? |
Please have her eyes checked by an ophthalmologist. Loss of night vision can be the first sign of vision problems. I went through the same thing with Lady last year. |
I think I will try the sensor light once I move, right now I am in an apartment so I cant put one up, but I should be moving into a house around January :) |
Maybe try taking a flashlight out with you... she may have run into something that scared her, but I would also get her eyes checked too. You just don't want to wait to long... or have her not going out of fear/night blindness, so a flashlight may work temporarily.... |
