It's a Miracle!! Cooper Can Walk (on a lead) Cooper is 2 1/2 years old and I've never been able to train him to properly walk on a lead. Frustrated when he was puppy, I hired a trainer to deal with my lack of training skills. After training he did wonderfully, however I never followed through as much as I should have Flash forward 2 years. Cooper pulls me like he's a 200 pound dog on a mission to get "there". He doesn't even know I'm with him. I believe I have tried every training technique I could find from treats, clicker, bottle with coins, etc. I have spent hours upon hours and have gotten nowhere. I bought the Easy Walk Harness as a result of advice given by another YT member. It took about 1/2 hour to adjust to fit Coop properly. I took him outside on our typical daily walk to the mailbox and it wasn't all that successful. I realized that this walk is so routine that nothing will work due to poor habits. We decided to go to a new park for a walk. Cooper walked INCREDIBLY! When he started to pull ahead, a couple of quick flicks with the wrist was all it took to refocus him. I was so very proud to walk him, even around people. It has completely changed him. Children even approached us and somehow, he didn't jump on them. The harness is made with a D ring in front that applies gentle pressure to his chest and shoulder blades. It is designed to redirect the dogs focus back to the owner. I know this post is extremely long, but I feel this product will really change mine and Cooper's relationship and allow us to explore outdoors a bit more. I hope that it can work for someone else who has similar issues to ours. Easy Walk Harness Product Description - Premier Pet I bought it on ebay. I bought another for Max, which I'm waiting for. |
YES! Yay Cooper! I TOLD you that EZ Walk harness is amazing! I got it when Jackson was 6 months old and it taught him to walk in 1 day. I totally swear by it. And you're right -- it took me a while to get it properly fitted, but once I did, it worked like a charm. I'm so happy for you and Cooper! Congrats! :):) |
Thank you so much! My only issue now, so far, is the daily walk to the mailbox. I'm on a country road and Cooper and I walk to retrieve the mail everyday. I think that because the walk is so routine, he still acts up because he knows exactly where we are going and how to get there. I've tried walking in different directions and turning around randomly, but it doesn't seem to work. Either way, we can walk in a park or a new place with ease. |

What a good boy! Peggy, Monkey & Maddie :daisy: |
Congrats. I was going to start with Tallulah on a leash next weekend but I think I'll check out this harness before we get any bad habits. I LOVE it when people share theyr success stories. |
Questions -- what size did you get? And how big is your dog? T weighs just under 3 lb right now and measured 10" around the chest the other day. Once you fit it to your dog, can you adjust it as they grow? |
Cooper is 10 pounds and his girth is 16". I bought the petite/small and it's perfect. Max is 9 pounds and his girth is almost 14". The petite/small starts at 14" but it was much too big. I bought him a petite, which is the smallest size. I'm not so sure this will work for a dog under 5 pounds. I have read some reviews where dogs step out of them so it's very important that it fits snugly. This is who I bought it from. I asked questions and the responses were extremely fast, as was the shipping PREMIER GENTLE LEADER EASY WALK DOG HARNESS - NO PULL Royal Blue Petite/Small - eBay |
Bravo Cooper!! :bravo: I bought Sophie a Easy Walk Harness from a YT member (Chattiesmom) who makes them custom fitted from lovely material and they do work beautifully. We used the front ring for training only and can now just use the D ring in the back for Sophies walks. |
That is just wonderful! It is so nice to go walking with them when it is a pleasant experience.:) |

Good Job Cooper! :D |
Thanks everyone. So we just went on our routine walk and maybe i didn't give Cooper (or myself:)) enough credit. He walked perfectly!! However, we did run into a major issue when i noticed part of the harness was not in the right spot. He somehow, not purposely, got his leg out of it. How odd, as it's so snug on him. I'm just glad I caught it in time. Highly recommended product. It really is incredible that we are walking together. |
Yeaaaaaaaa Cooper! way to go buddy! |
Update on Coop Dog Cooper is still walking like a pro. It takes him about 2 minutes to start behaving once it's on, but it does work. However, on 2 separate occasions he has been able to get one front leg out of the harness. I have no idea how he's doing this as it fits him so snug. He's not trying to get out of it, but while we are walking I'll glance down and see it's not on correctly. Still highly recommended but now very cautious on our walks. Max's harness just came in the mail yesterday so I'll report back on his as well. |
:congrats:WTG Cooper! Your the man!!!! :bravo: |
i JUST made a post similar to this, then of course I saw this one.. maybe I should hit up chattiesmom :) |
Way to go Cooper! I'm glad the harness is working for him. We have a beagle that comes for day care every day at work who uses this for walking. Some people have a problem walking him with it because he too can get his leg out. The problem is when the harness is loose OR when your walking with a very loose leash the front loop where the D ring is will "sag" a little and this enables the dog to get its leg out. If you keep the leash up then you won't have this problem. I do this with the beagle and we never have a problem. i still walk him on a loose leash but not too loose so as the leash droops down toward the ground and then back up to me. As for your routine walk to the mail box, maybe change it up a little. Go out the back door, circle the house, walk to the perimeter of the property and then towards the mail box so he doesn't know the exact way your going. change the route every day so its a fun mini walk for him and you. also the time of day you check the mail can vary so he won't expect the walk at the same time every day. |
Thanks for your advice. I'll make sure the leash is held upright. His harness is so very tight so that he doesn't slip his leg out. max on the other end has such long legs that there's no way he can get out of his! |
i've also noticed that when someone else walks the beagle with the harness they tend to not use it correctly so he still pulls with them. So the next time when i walk him I have to retighten and re adjust the harness to its proper fitting. so any excessive pulling or incorrect use can mess up the fit of the harness and cause the chest strap to become looser. |
I do figure 8's with mine. I intend to go out and wear their butts out for about 30 minutes or so (till I get dizzy). It teaches them to watch your feet for direction, so they have to hang back or get left behind. I also bought different gizmos. The one you have worked the longest... she gets mad and refuses to walk at all! Same way with the one that goes around the muzzle. Boy, if looks could kill.... |
