Day 1 of crate training. Since we brought Poppy home she has slept in her play pen with her bed, food/water and toys at one end and her pee pad at the other. She was trained on her pee pad from around 3 months old and we are now starting to train her to go outside. So last night I switched her pen for the crate. I expected her to cry one or two times in the night for potty as this was the first time she couldnt go potty when she needed it. But she was so good! I let her out for potty before bed and she went in the crate without a problem. She didnt cry once through the night and didnt potty in her crate either. :D First thing in the morning I took her outside to potty and she peed and did 2 poops in the garden! Lets hope she keeps it up. ;) |
Woohoo! Go Poppy :D A very good start to potty training! |
That is good to hear. I was thinking of switching Riley from xpen to crate and am wondering how he will do...... :-) |

Plus its alot easier to clean then the white fur one which I bought at the weekend. I thought it was best to crate her as at the moment she makes no attempt to "hold it", so crating seems like the best way to teach her that she can hold it. :) Good luck! |

Good job!!! too bad I didn't crate train lexi. Lexi sleeps with me in my bed, and I LOVE IT! and she's pretty good with holding it till morning (sometimes there are accidents..too much freedom, I KNOW). Anyways great way to start off your furbaby! |

Some crate train young and it works great for them, but as I work full time Poppy can be by heself for upto 5 hours sometimes. (not often it all depends on which shifts my parents are on but never anymore then 5 hours. This was why I put her in the pen with her pad when she was younger as I knew she wouldnt be able to hold it for that long. But now she is older she has no problems holding it for that length of time. :) She actually stopped going potty in her pen as much a few weeks ago so this was a sign to me that she was beginning to hold it. Which is why im not crating her. :) |
Sorry I ment to write 'which is why im NOW crating her' :) |

I think that with her being so young pee pad training would be a good option at the moment. I used to keep a pad in the pen with Poppy so she had a place to potty away from her bed. I think this is something you should consider because your pup cannot like sleeping near or with pee/poop. I brought Poppy home at 6 weeks which I know is very young but I began to pad train her straight away, and by the time she was 3 months she was completley pad trained. We would then leave a pad at the back door and she would go to it all by herself to potty. While they cannot hold it for long I really do think this is something you should consider, plus its easier to clean! :) |

sorry...let me clarify....she has pads in her x-pen on the opposite side of her bedding as well as her food and water which is away from the pads. she has toys to play with as well. she just doesn't get it yet, i guess. |

I dont know how exactly I got Poppy to use the pads, I just praised her lots and she sort of got the hang of it. Are the pads you are using scented? If not im pretty sure there is some sort of spray you can spray on them which makes dogs want to pee on them. :) |

Come to think of it when Poppy was smaller she pooped in her bed twice I think... but I think the bed was too big for her and maybe she couldnt get out in time, im not sure. Im sure your baby will grow out of it, as like I said dogs are clean animals and dont like to mess in their sleeping area usually. :) Also you could try giving her a treat when she uses the pad, mine go crazy for cheese! |
Congrats!!! |
Day 2 of crate training. So while I was at work yesterday my mum was looking after Poppy, she said she only had one accident. Which is progress I guess hehe. :D So last night she did well in her crate and didnt cry through the night, she started to cry at around 8am this morning so we went straight outside where she peed and pooped. :) Very proud of my little girl! How long did it take for your baby to be house broken? |
Not going to say Rizzo is totally housebroken, but he is now 10 months old, and we haven't had an accident in the house or in his crate in...I think at least 2 months. I take him out every 2-3 hours when I'm home, and he stays in my kitchen with a pee pad while I'm at work just in case. Sometimes when I get home during the lunch hour the pad will still be clean :D though when I get home from work at the end of the day it'll be used...weird since there is a shorter gap from lunch to off work time??? Probably because he runs around like crazy and drinks a bunch of water when I lock him back up after lunch. So I'd say it took about 6 months of constant work to get him housetrained :D |

Im hoping she will catch on quickly but I know it could take a long time. I know a lady who has a bernese mountain and she had him trained within 24hours  I will choose not to believe her or I will be eaten up with jelousy hehe. :D:rolleyes: |
I had a lab/shephard mix that was trained in a day as well...I adopted him from the pound and we had one poo incident and one pee incident. I scolded him and put him outside to show that was where he was supposed to go and from then on he was great. Then again he has so far been the easiest dog to train in every aspect, I even taught him to do backflips! lol, my mom hated it when I had the 70lb dog do a backflip in her house :P Some dogs seem to be much more receptive to training than others, and I think that because Max was a pound puppy he was more willing to please his family that saved him, but who knows? And I've had a setback on the potty training :( I must have forgotten to put his belly band on him, I went to the bathroom and when I came out I smelled that "smell" bleh, I found the puddle in my bedroom. I would assume that it was marking, but with the quantity of the pee it just looks like he was relieving himself. Frustrating, but I guess I still cant trust him to be alone for 5 minutes...I was hoping that I'd finally be able to give him at least half of the house to run around in while at work, but guess not. He is great with his pee pads, but for some reason he decided that my bedroom is also a potty. I've never had pee pads in there and the only reason for him to be in there was for bed, since that is where I keep his crate. Maybe I'll put a pad down in my bedroom too??? gah, so frustrated, I'm doing something wrong so I need to figure that out. |

Im not sure what to do about it, ive never owned a cat. Can anyone help!? Also I would like to add we have gone 2 days without an accident in the house woohoo! :p:D |
Congrats!! With the cat, I just kept him from the part of the house that he has decided was "his" and there were no "accidents" when I got home, so maybe that'll be that, until at least I find this rescue kitten a new home...but then again he did this before she came along. Ugh! Cats, such tricky little creatures, maybe now that he knows I'm on to him he'll stop. |
