Outdoors and in? My pup was trained by the breeder to use the pee pad ( she will be 1 year old in a week...the dog... not the trainer ) ;) I've been "mostly" successful, but she has many occurances where she uses the carpet still! My question is this. BEFORE I purchase new carpeting, I am trying to retrain her to go outdoors also. I leave her in her own bedroom during the day while at work, so she'll use the pad then. Is it possible to train a dog to do both indoors and out? Has anyone had success with both or is it just too confusing? I have no option but to pad train her while I'm away 8+ hours a day, but would like her to ask to go outside when I am here. |
Well, I have, in a roundabout way.:D I started mine using pads indoors and gradually moved it closer to the door until I moved them into the attached garage. I wanted her to use pads in the garage if the weather was really bad and go outside the rest of the time. Somehow we got to that point. It worked with my other yorkie, too. So, yes, it can be done for sure if I did it.:D |
Thank you! That gives me hope. She is using the pad indoors, BUT she's also using the carpet occassionally! I'll try moving the pad slowly towards the door and see how that works. |
The one Yorkie I trained as a pup with the benefit of what I've learned on YT uses the pad when she has to but prefers to go outside. It took 8 months, but I'm very happy with her potty habits. |
my first girl was pee pad trained the first year, then she started to be an outdoor dog. I had to take away the pee pads completely even when i was out for hours because she was confused. She is my worst of the three with accidents. and little to say when one goes on the floor then the other 2 follow. I have a hoover steam vac that works wonders. My dog was just confused when i offered both. but all dogs are different. |
Oh wow...8 months? *gulp* I just messaged you, AK Yorkie, to ask about how you managed with your pups in the winter. I should've looked here to an answer to my question. Now I feel embarrassed. :( I should've started training Jenna sooner. Now the weather's going to be nasty in about a few weeks up here and she insists on going outdoors for potty time. >.< Although I can't imagine she's REALLY going to want to be outdoors in subzero snowy weather. So I have hope she'll be more interested in the puppy pad by then. Good to know it doesn't necessarily ruin their house training. *nods* |
