House breaking Older puppy with bad habits! I have 4 year old yorkie that is trained to puppy pads. He does great. We had a little bit of trouble when we moved to our new house. We had him fixed and this solved his problems. Now we have a 9 month old yorkie. We have had him since little pup. We crated him at first and sat him on the puppy pads before letting him out. He did pretty good with that. Now we have him with our other yorkie in the laundry room during the day. He uses the puppy pad in there with no problems. The problem is when we let him out. He won't go use the puppy pad when he is out. We watch him and try to sit him on the pad before we let him out, but he won't go. He usually pees under the kitchen table and poops under my daughters bed, if he ever gets in her room by accident. We had him fixed and this didn't help at all. We put him back in the laundry room when he pees in the floor, but I don't want him to be put up all the time. I tried crateing him again, but my husband sleeps during the day and he barks for hours when he is crated and he does fine in the laundry. I need some help:eek: |
The only suggestion I can offer is that you get an ex-pen and put him in there with a piddle pad if you can't watch him. Are you taking him out on a regular basis or putting him on the pad on a regular basis, especially shortly after they drink or about 20 minutes after they eat? Sorry I can't be of more help, but the only guidance anyone can probably give you is to watch them like a hawk and if you can't then put him in the ex-pen with the pad. |
I have pretty much the same situation. I have a 5 yr old female yorkie who is 100% peepad trained - never had an accident since she was about 8 months old. We now have added another little guy to our family - and he is now 9 months old and still pees and poops where he is not suppose to. I know that it is difficult to crate train him when you already have one that is running around freely. I too leave them in the laundry room at night and when we leave the house. I have noticed that he will not pee or poop if the pads are dirty. He needs a clean pad at all times. So when I open the door in the morning - there usually is a mess waiting for me to clean up. When I feed him, I close the door to the laundry room and stay inside with him until he eats and poops, which is pretty good. Its the every once in a while when he tries and goes to the pads and just poops right outside the laundry room area - I don't get it. I have found that girls are much easier to train and my little guy is not as smart as my little girl. So I continue to gate off the rest of the house and try my best to watch him every chance I get. But at this point, when you expect that you would be done training, it has been getting frustrating. Well good luck to you (and to me - LOL). |
I have 2 yorkies, male and female. They both were trained at around 9 months old but reliable at 1 year. My problem was that I got Chloe finally trained and then decided to get my little boy Andy. I was potty training for over a year and I was very frustrated. Anyway, the reason why I'm replying is because you said your husband sleeps during the day so you don't want to keep them in the crate because of barking. Personally, our pups whine and bark when they are in the crate, too. But here's the thing, if they can see either me or my husband while they are in the crate, they are fine. So I bought an extra crate to put in our bedroom so they wont bark at night because they can see us. When we got Andy, he would whine at night and we would tell him firmly "NO!" and he eventually stopped because he knew we were still in the room with him. I am so glad the potty training days are over. Good luck and I hope everything turns out for you! |
