Sleeping in kennel again Poor Latte broke her foot and while she's in the splint I have to have her in her kennel at night. Well, the Spoiled Darling is very unhappy about this and makes sure we know it about every 20 minutes. I have tried telling her "no" and "quit", but as a last resort, we had to move the kennel to the garage (a good temperature, just away from our room). I feel like the Bad Mommy, but know that she doesn't know it's the garage and she's safe, resting her leg and I can get some sleep. Does anyone have any suggestions or, at least, some reassurances for me?? |
4 Attachment(s) Sorry to hear she broke her foot. When Pixie had Lp surgery a few months ago I thought she would never settle down for 6 weeks of confinement. What I did was I got a plastic play yard and set it up next to my bed and she settled in really well. I also got her a little ex pen for rabbits and such and put it up where ever I was so she would be with the rest of us. I even put it on my bed in a circle so she could sleep on the bed but still be confined. I think it helped that after a week I was able to put her sister Roxie in with her. I have attached some pics of the different set ups I used so she wouldn't get bored in her confinement. I hope your little one will settle in and not have to be in the garage seperatd from you. |
good ideas... Those are good ideas...I wish I could talk to Latte! I know what she wants-she wants to get on the bed with us. But that's how she broke her foot-she fell off the bed at night. She'll be able to be with us more and sleep in her bed when her splint is off. I wish she could understand that she needs to settle down and go to sleep! I don't know if the problem is that the kennel is a kennel, or if she just wants to get on the bed with us. |
Do you use a ramp or stairs for her to her up and down on? I have a ramp on the side of my bed and trained each one to use it to go up and down. Of course, one day, Nikki the male rescue I took in scared Pixie and she walked off the end of the bed and ended up having LP surgery 2 weeks later. I know the fall is what did it. She had never shown any signs of LP. I didn't even know she had it. |

When Jersey broke his leg, he wasn't crazy about the crate but we had no choice. I used a big crate that I borrowed from a neighbor (her german shepard use to sleep in it) we kept it in the livingroom and I slept on an aero bed close to the crate. Sometimes I would lay in the kennel with him I know crazy but I felt so bad for him. So don't stress just do what's best for her and before you know it she'll be back to herself again.:) |
Thanks! Thank you- your words are very encouraging. I know I'm doing what's best for her, and for us. I will try having her by the bed and see if she can quiet down. If not, I guess she'll have to be out of earshot. I was wondering if her kennel was bigger if she'd be happier. Hmmm...maybe I can borrow one. But this one is hers and she's comfortable in it. Maybe I should put one of my shirts in it? |
What about putting her crate on your bed? At least for the time being? I did that when Nala got back from her spay... DH slept downstairs haha:p. That way she can still see and be near you but will be safe and secure. The stairs are a good idea for the future. |
No room Nope-the bed's not big enough for the crate and DH would not be happy with me sharing my bed without him! We have stairs for her, but she has always been very restless at night. It was a pure accident that she fell and broke her foot. Usually she lets me know that she wants to get down, but she just slipped that night. We made the biggest mistake years ago when we let her sleep with us in the first place. If I didn't have to work in the morning it's be different. I have been having a talk with her, hoping she will adjust soon! I really appreciate everyone's ideas!:thumbup: |
