Gating off a room Good afternoon ladies and gents, I am looking to find the perfect free standing expandable gate for my living room. Basically I want my little guy to have more running around room when no one is home. I don't trust him in the living room because he likes to chew up my wires. Expanding Pet Gate - Improvements Catalog I need something with 3 feet height just like that gate, however I need it to expand to 82" so that it goes from wall to wall. Chris can easily jump over a 2 and a half foot gate so I am hoping that 36" will be perfect. The only purpose of this gate is to keep him in the hallway/kitchen area. This way he can run around like a maniac and still not cause havoc! Let me know what feedback you have. I need to reduce Chris's bunny hops else he will keep jumping higher and higher! -Justin |
41 views and no replies? I guess I'll have to custom fabricate something. |
We had a similar problem trying to find a gate to keep our baby in the kitchen when we're not home. We got a piece of the white plastic trellis (from a home store/lumberyard). We tried the wooden kind first but the holes in were 2" and our pup got his head stuck in it. The plastic type has 1" opening so he can't get his head in it. We place it across the doorway opening and then you can put chairs against it to hold it up. The pieces are 4' by 8' so it's too high for them to jump over. Our guy can jump pretty high but not over this. If it gets dirty just take it oustide and hose it off. Hope this helps you!! Good luck! |
Justin - it might be called lattice not trellis. Ask at a lumber type store and they will know what it is. |
Wal Mart carriers one in the baby department that has extensions to make it wider, pluse the gate swings open so you don't have to remove it all the time. I have 2 and love them, they are around $40 but worth the money. Good luck |

I have an area that is 64 inches, I bought the one you posted and it is great. I could use a wider one as well. Good luck, if you find it, please post. :) |

I am lucky in that my dogs are kept in their designated are by using adjustable window screens as gates. They are the kind you can buy and put in your windows. They will not jump over them, even the one that is only 12" high. I place them in the door openings to gate them out of the rest of the house; it gives them access to the kitchen, dining room and den. Works great. |
I could just imagine mine chewing through it... :( |
I went and bought two of the expandable gates from K-Mart. Walmart only carried the plastic ones and I knew Charlie would chew through them. They are high enough he can't jump over them. |
We actually had a screen door installed between our living room and bedroom wings to separate our merged families - one cat and one dog. It looked a little strange, but there were never any worries about anybody getting around a smaller barrier. We never were able to put Amanda and Bungee in the same room but the screen door gave us an armed truce. |
There's a really great one in the Frontgate magazine you may want to take a look at. |
Ive always just used a baby gate itself, but never needed one so big. Good luck on it. BTW - your pup is cute and it has a GREAT name :D |
I might need to just start training him not to dig into my leather couches and chew wires. That would save me a headache. I don't want to get rid of his ex-pen because he loves hiding in there and pooping/peeing in there as well. Quote:

You can buy ex-pens that are 36" high. They usually come with plastic caps that are about 4" long that are applied to the top of each section at the folding point to keep it from folding in out out. We have also used a trellis channel to place over the entire length of the ex-pen to keep it rigid. Alternately you can also use a 2"x8" base with a grove in it where you set the ex-pen about 1/2" deep into the wood. If you don't have a router to make the groove, then use two strips of 1/2" by whatever length you need to create the channel to hold the ex-pen secure on each side. That will give it stability and make it easier to move. We have used trellisses as well in the past but they are not as attractive as an ex-pen. For a large area like yours you will need some type of mechanism on each side to keep it attached to the wall to ensure safety. Metal hooks that you screw into the wall works well. |
I currently have an ex-pen that is 48" high, I might have overdone it heh. He was easily clearing 32 inch ex-pen so I had to step it up. it is a 4ft x 4ft ex-pen but I feel bad if he is stuck in it all day. I'd rather give him more room to run around when he is alone. |
Figured I'd update this thread, I did end up purchasing the expanding freestanding gate. My dog did not like it at first, so I had to buy the anti-chew spray to get him to leave it alone. Everything was going well for a few weeks until I started leaving through the back door. When I came home through the front door I found that my dog managed to get through the gate. Looks like he was able to squeeze his body through the gaps in the gate. He does this about once a month, it is not tight enough to get him stuck. I am going to end up putting up something between the holes so that it is impenetrable. I've had the gate for about 5-6 months now and I love it. I would advise against it for smaller dogs though. Chris is 6 lbs, tall and skinny. |
