Refuses to go outside when its wet out This summer I decided I was done with litter boxes and pee pads. When the weather is nice our training seems to go quite well but as soon as it is a little damp on the ground my little girl refuses to go outside. I can lock her outside for up to an hour - she'll hold it and pee on the floor as soon as I let her in the house. Or...I wait until I see signs of her needing to go (sniffing, pacing quickly around) and I'll put her outside. She will then hold it until she comes inside....I'll watch her like a hawk because I know she has to go but she'll leave my sight for 10 seconds and have a pee on the ground and be working on pooping on my floor WHY IS GOING OUTSIDE SO TRAUMATIC?!!! What can I do? I feel like I am doing everything properly with the kennel training and monitoring, yet my girl has a bladder of steel and will hold it for hours until the perfect moment to do it in the house. |
My dog doesn't like to go out in the rain either. When it's very rainy or snowy we use pee pee pads. When he goes out after it rains he won't step on the grass, only will walk on the sidewalk or the patio. Maybe they don't like the wet sensation on their feet. Mine doesn't like it when I wipe his feet off. |
I have a smaller girl that does the same thing. Most of the time she just uses pee pads because it is easier. I really don't recommend locking her outside alone. It can be dangerous and she is probally scared. |
go outside with her on a 6 ft leash. stand in one spot and give her the potty command. then just stand there and ignore her. eventually she will go, then you get excited and give her a treat. its basically a waiting game, and you have to outlast her. If you've been out there for 30 minutes with no results take her back inside and put her in a small crate where she can't potty. after 5 minutes repeat the whole process. this is what i did with mine when she was a baby and i was house breaking her. only had to stand outside in the rain once for 30 minutes before she decided peeing fast is better then holding out and getting soaked. |
Our little guy hates the wet ground also, he hops and tries to avoid it at all costs. But standing outside with them while they go potty really does help, they know that once they go they can go back inside where it is nice and dry. It just takes a little time but they should get the hang of it. Good luck with potty training! |
I"ve noticed the same thing with Scarlett. She is 15 weeks old. She just hates the rain and the wet grass in the morning. We have a big patio umbrella that I put up over her penned grass area the other day and that seemed to help with the rain. This morning I had the same problem with the dew on the grass. She peed fine. Hopped around and whined until I picked her up and took her back inside. Within 5 minutes she had pooped on the carpet. I got this idea to put down a pee pad in the wet grass to see if that works. Took her out once so far and she peed on it right away. |
