Scat Mat pet deterrent? Has anyone tried this mat that gives the dog a (very little) shock/tone to stop the dog entering a room etc? It is said to be Vet approved and harmless to dogs and cats and even pups and kittens. It had good reviews and seemed very effective. I bought one to try and stop my little jumpin' Houdini going up the stairs, but he walks over it like it wasn't there!!! (I am scared he will jump down the stairs or go thru the rails and break his legs, and have tried gates etc to no avail.) He does not like to be confined in a pen or single room and this seemed an excellent idea, in theory, to give him safety and freedom too! He is 2yrs and 8 pounds. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has used it and how it worked for you. Thanks. |
I'm not a big fan of these training methods. You would probably have better luck with positive reinforcement. You first teach him how to sit and stay using treats. Next, go up one step and tell him to stay. If he doesn't, come down the step towards him and he should back off. Repeat. If he stays, give him a treat. It is a long process, but the end result is better for you and your Yorkie. |
Scat Mat Thank you for your input. I agree with you, other training methods are better. I have tried, but he is so far not responding. Probably the teenage youth in him. LOL. However, you have encouraged me to try harder. Thank you for your interest and help. |
I have a baby gate across the bottom of the stairs so Beamer and Lil Bit can't get up the stairs.:) |
Gate Thank you. I have baby gates but he jumps over them and nearly kills himself, he is a real Houdini!!! He can also jump thru the stair rail vertical slats and get above the gate to the stairs. My, this dog is smarter than me! I am trying to confine him in a safe laundry room at this time to try that out, and the crying is BAD! I will keep trying all measures and be patient. He has also taken to peeing if left alone even for short times, however tired or peed-out on the walk beforehand. I guess he just does not like being alone and we will just have to hope he improves with age and experience. Perhaps we will have to resort to belly bands when left alone until we have cured this. As he was a rehome we were extra soft on him at first, but we are paying the price now! The training must begin in earnest before his habits get fixed in him. He is such a sweetie though and melts one's heart, bad habits and all! LOL. :aimeeyork |
I used to raise Bengal cats, which is an extremely active breed of cat and a scat mat saved our Christmas tree. I was always terrified that the cats would get hurt with the tinsel and other ornaments. Someone recommended a scat mat so we tried it. We were told to turn it on high, only while we were there with them and when they got used to it. The mat has a small clicking sound from the electric charge. It would only take one step and then they wouldn't go past the mat. Once they got used to the mat we had it on the lowest level and I could easily put my hand on it; It would give a very small tingle but nothing like a shock. The cats didn't step over it as they could still hear the clicking sound and knew it was turned on. I know I will get a lot of flack over this, but the scat mat really worked for us when nothing else did. Good luck with your training! |
I don't think you'll get flack....even if you do...who cares. I saw one of these being used in a show breeders home in Kokomo, IN and wish I would have asked where she got it. Worked like a charm. Are they called "Scat Mat"? and where can they be found? |
I'm glad you are willing to try the positive reinforcement. If he is one to figure things out, he might be able to overcome the mat. Plus, from what you say with him peeing while you're gone, the mat might make him even more anxious. With the peeing while you're gone, this is a way for him to "relieve" the anxiety. Start by closing him in the laundry room for just a few seconds, and then reenter. When he's quiet, give him a treat. Increase the time you're out of the room gradually. I hope this works and let us know how it's going. Sincerely, Sonya |

Scat Mat Thank you Trin and others for your helpful input. I know it sounds a bad control method, but it is Vet approved and they say after only a few times the mat works without the power on. I am only thinking of resorting to this as all other methods do not work for me, and I do not wish my little one to break his legs on the stairs. I now have belly bands and still need to get the mat. Will let you know what happens. Thanks again all. |

I really respect Victoria Stilwell and the work she does with dogs. Victoria Stilwell Positively| Why Positive Reinforcement (+R) |
Hope all goes well for you and your pup! Let us know how things turn out!:) |
Flack, smack! I would rather have flack than a dead dog. That dang scat mat worked wonders for keeping our darling angel off the white sofa. Good grief, if I had been dealing with stairs.....I would really be freaked out. Patience is my long suit but listening to crying is not. So I understand your pain. I did the treats but the sofa was the last step in leaving "precious" the run of the house when I would step out. She was perfect as long as I was home. But after the scat mat....she was perfect ALL THE TIME. |
