Need to vent.... I don't know what to do anymore. I know Kaji pees when he's excited and when he's nervous. I have worked with him over the past year and we have, or had , curbed that behavior. Our don't touch, don't talk, routine had been working so well. This week we're having trouble again. :( I started working Aug 2, and he hasn't taken it well. Some days he refuses to eat, others he won't move from the spot he was in for 8 hours. Yesterday, after I had taken him to potty and empty his bladder, I picked him up to cuddle him. As I pulled him up, he peed on me from toes to my neck. Again today, I called him over to cuddle up to me and he peed on my brother's pillow. (I was using it) He's peed on the carpet, my brother's bed, and he peed on the couch. If he's trying to make me feel horrible, it's working. Anyone got any new ideas I could try? |
Sorry, I don't have an advice. Poor you and poor Kaji. :( I hope someone will have suggestions for you and I hope he adjusts to your new routine soon. |
Oh no... how frustrating! Could it be that he has a UTI? The other thing that came to my mind is belly bands... It would relax you and since our babies are very sensitive to our moods it may relax Kaji too... |
I was thinking about going back to belly bands except for now Kaji is piddle pad trained. What if he finally relaxes enough to actually start using his pads again and the belly band is on him? He'll completely soil himself and knowing my fam, they'll just leave him like that until I get home. They say they'll help, but the draw the line in funny places. NO ONE WILL WASH HIM UP! It's not a UTI, I don't think, but since we have a vet appointment today I'll have him checked for that. He does the same thing he use to do when he first got home. Cower, look down as if he was guilty of the most heinous crime, and then the little tail goes up which indicates he's peeing. He'll do that standing, sitting, or being picked up. I've instructed my little brother to give him chicken treats when I'm gone. Kaji loves them, and my little brother is now the only person allowed to give him those, per my instructions. I was hoping they would help make Kaji's day more enjoyable. Kaji will do his tricks for the treats but as soon as there is no more treats for the day, he sulks, goes back to where he was sitting, and just waits. :( |
Is he what they call a submissive pee-er? I've heard of that. I think he will need some time to adjust to you're going back to work. Mine are experiencing the same thing PLUS moving . . and I can tell it has wreaked havoc with their housetraining. |
Aw poor Kaji! And you! He must really miss you during the day. Can you come home for lunch and a visit? If not... call him or leave a message someone could play for him so he can hear your voice. Try greeting him outside and maybe walk him first thing when you get home, before any making over him. Or greet and hug him on the ground so he doesn't have the opportunity to soil you. Or put the belly band on him before you pick him up. I think his urinating is marking, he's trying to claim what he's feeling a loss of... you! My guy's been neutered for 9 years, and I got 3 girls within a year. If he's not getting enough attention from me... he furiously will mark everywhere... to let me and the girls know this is still his house! When it was just me and him, he slept the whole time I was gone. Is there a doggy daycare he could go to 2-3 times a week? Just until he adjusts? Or a friend with another Yorkie that could keep him a few days a week? Just to keep his mind occupied and maybe allow him more mental and physical stimulation while you're at work? And, yes, a vet check first to rule out anything medical... Hope all goes well today... |
You mean like interactive toys? I like that idea. Anyone have suggestions? The vet will let me know on Monday what the results are. She said to pay more attention to him when I'm home and give hi time to adjust. If that doesn't help, she told me to start considering putting Kaji on prozac. That scares me. :( |
So... the vet trip must have been extra stressful because we have loose stool this morning. Did I mention he climbed me like a spider man and I was a skyscraper? |

As soon as we were out of the room, Missy and Kaji were trying to play in the waiting room. That vet office is a foster home to a shelter kitty. Guess which two yorkies were terrorizing the kitty? |
It sounds like he's a serious submissive pee-er. Meaning that when you go towards him he urinates. Even thou he loves you and definitely knows you by now. He still pees. Ella does the same thing. She's just not sure of herself. We ABSOLUTELY can NOT spank or discipline her. We have to have to have to train with positive rewards and ignore her actions that we don't like. Try not pulling him towards you or picking him up. Instead wait till he comes to you, NO eye contact that's intimidating. And then cuddle. You just want to try to build up his self confidence again. Try leaving him with toys that will keep him busy while you're gone. |

I agree with whoever suggested that you take him for a walk as soon as he gets home. Maybe leave his harness on all day, so you just have to clip the leash on him and take him out. Would your brother be willing to take him for a walk during the day? I believe you can get a dog walker for ~$10/hour... even a few times a week could help. I've also seen a "toy timer" that basically works like a clock. Every hour it rotates, and whatever has been put in that hour's slot falls out. You could try treats or toys. How about a frozen kong he can work on all day? Finally, I don't think Prozac is such a bad idea. I think it's pretty cool that antidepressants work on both dogs and people, actually. If he is that unhappy, he deserves to feel better. You can discuss with your vet, but I'd imagine the Prozac would be a temporary measure until he adjusts. Good luck! Please let us know how it works out. |

I don't get it. |

That's why, instead of a walk, I immediately walk into the bathroom where his piddle pad is, and I ask him to go potty. Immediately after that, it's fetch time. It had been working so well for the past few months on the rare occasion that I left the house without him, or the three weeks when I was working and Kaji had no accidents. Last week, my 4th week of work, he had a few accidents. See why I'm perplexed? |
So he's been fine for three weeks while you were at work, and then this week, he's backslid? If that's the case, I wonder if it's your work that's the problem. Maybe something else changed? You know, it's also possible that it's temporary. If he's been on the program for six months, something may have set him off for a bit. |
