Need serious potty advice I'm fairly new to YT, and first would like to say hello to everyone. I'll be getting my first Yorkie next month (so excited) and have been doing a TON of research trying to make sure that everything goes right. My b/f says I'm obsessed but hey there's nothing wrong with making sure your very prepared, right? ;) My dilemma I have though is, I live in Florida and as you know it rains ALOT this time of year, specially with hurricane season lasting until November. Will it be harder to potty train outside when the weather is crappy? I really didn't want to pee pad train her, b/c of all the stories I read about people having problems switching their babies f/m pee pads to just outdoors. Ultimately I want her to go potty just outside (I know it will take time), but my question is if thats my goal should I only train her outside despite the weather? I have clothes and jackets for her and know that she has to be throughly dried if she does get wet b/c she can get sick, catch chill, etc. I'm torn though b/c I myself don't even like to go in the rain for a minute, so I could imagine how uncomfortable it would be to go to the bathroom in it. I'm just afraid that doing both will confuse her, or when she sees a carpet her thinking that its a giant pee pad. I feel like I've pretty much covered all my other bases, I just really need some serious advice on this one!! |
Are there ANY covered areas at all outside for her to pee? Or possibly, this might seem silly... If you have a porch or a covered area.. try using a washable pee pad and have her go on that.. but OUTSIDE. ? Maybe so she atleast gets the idea of going outside. |
1 Attachment(s) Welcome. I'm a fellow Floridian, living in Palm Bay. I have a pek (almost 13 years old) and two yorkies (20 months and 7 months). All three of mine potty outside. I've never used the pads. I have a big umbrella and walk them outside when its raining. The two older ones will hold it forever before they go out with me...but my youngest looks at me like I'm crazy, then just runs outside and goes and runs back in. When she was smaller (adopted at 10 weeks/8 oz), I used a superyard xt for a potty pen outside (used on both yorkies). I put her in it and didn't let her out until she went. She soon realized that she could get out when she went. I also put one of those big yard umbrellas in the pen for the rain and sun. I didn't put the extension on it, so it was closer to the ground and protected them more. So far, it's worked for me. We haven't gone thru the hurricane thing with the yorkies yet, but I think if we stay home we will probably put down the pads in a room or puppy pen for their use. If we do end up taking them out, I'm going to use a lease so they don't fly away! lol It's really not bad potty training them in FL. Don't forget to post pics of your new baby. Can't wait to see! |
I would recommend a grid. I'm trying to post some pictures of mine... but that's what I used, and Harley is 10 months and is 99% house broke. He also goes outside. Another thing that is important is to pick a cue and teach them it. Harley goes on his tray during the day when he's inside, but if I time his walks right, he does his night pee and poo outside when we walk. With the grid for some reason they are a lot easier to bring outside. My breeder trains all her puppies on the grid, that way they aren't stuck on pee pads. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...og-ugodog.html here is the thread where I posted info on how to make one or the products you can buy... There are a lot of people who don't like this system but it really works for me, I like it and Harley did really well with it. Plus he goes outside too... and if we travel he still will go on a pee pad. |
Thanks for all the replies, I just found out how to find my old posts. I'm sure there's an easier way to find them again but atleast I know I can find them this way too. |
