still pooping in crate and anywhere in my house Mason will be 2 yrs old in November and he still poops in my house and in his crate. He never pees inside or in his crate, so he has to know better, right? I've even had obedience training in my home and she was at a loss as to what to do with him regarding housebreaking. Also, he is crated with Paris as it fits the 2 of them comfortably with no room to mess and then move away. He doesn't care, he does it anyway. Paris is 3 months old and I work from home so they both go out all day long every 45 mins to an hour, sometimes I make them wait longer so she can train herself to hold it longer. She is doing way better than he ever has. I can often predict her schedule. She's like clockwork. He is not the typical dog that poops first thing in the morning and after he eats. He eats at the same time everyday but, I can't predict when he needs to go. Sometimes it'll take 2 hrs, 8-9 hrs before he has to poop and some days, he doesn't go at all during the day and the minute we put him in his crate at night (11pm), he poops some time during the night. I'm at my wits end. Any advice on what to try? I've been trying to teach him to ring the bell for almost 1 yr now and he just won't do it, nor will he even stand by the door to let me know if he needs to go.:( |
I have a similar problem with my Farrah. She eats every day at 8am. Then poops some time around 2:30-3:30 and then again about an hour or so later. This is brand new. Prior she was all over the map even though I feed her once a day. She still "saves" some for overnight because 9 out of 10 nights I will wake up to find poop in the crate and her sleeping on it. Joyful I know. Do you feed your pup once a day? That might help. Also limit freedom in the home to an x-pen. Good Luck. |
How old is Farrah? I feed them twice a day at 6:30 and 5 pm. I normally keep Paris in a crate when I can't watch her. Mason isn't allowed to go upstairs and normally doesn't roam around the house. He usually follows me wherever I go. Today, he was with me and I got busy doing something for about 5 mins and he disappeared before I realized he was gone and there ya go. A nice present left on my carpet and then he goes to his bed as if he knows he has done something wrong. Last week, we were all in the kitchen and hubby and I were talking with the kids and he did it while in the kitchen, right under our noses, per se, but because we were having a deep discussion, we didn't see him. I even give treats when he DOES poop outside, but he's just not getting it. |
First of all they shouldn't be in the same crate, even though there is room for both of them. For actual crate training, he should have been in a crate that is no bigger than for him to stand up and turn around in. Once they are crate trained, you should keep them in a much larger crate, especially if there are two dogs. If he every makes a mistake, the crate needs to be cleaned thoroughly with an enzyme cleaner to remove any scent of urine or feces, otherwise, he'll think that's where he's suppose to go. NEVER make him wait longer to make him learn to hold it. He's not trained to NOT go in his crate so you are just teaching him to go in his crate. Most dogs will do everything they can to not soil their den, and somewhere along the line, he's learned that he has no choice. If you keep the puppy with him, she'll learn to do this too. When they are out of the crate, are they closely supervised? Is he going all over the house as well? Does he ever go outside? What do you do, when this happens? Remember, you should act very happy and give a small treat for this: Have you thought about an x-pen with a pee pad? This site has good advice for housebreaking, for indoors or out and even a schedule you can use, and lots of great tips. I think you need to start all over. Free House Training for Puppies and Adult Dogs - No More Accidents Starting Today! It sounds like at two, you might have the problem rescued puppy mill dog owners have, and you might never be able to train them to not go in his crate. I really think Mason has learned to go in his crate, and may even be holding it so he can go in his crate. |

I know we are not supposed to give them a chance to potty in the house so maybe you can tether him to you so he cannot hide? |

it could be that he has just gotten into this habit. Perhaps before you got him they were kept in a small crate and had to sleep and poop in the same place, so never learned fany better. Do you free feed? You might need to not allow him to eat afte 5 pm. Do you take him out first thing in the morning, as soon as your feet hit the floor? My guess is, he is going early in the morning as soon as he wakes up, and that is why he doesn't go when you let him out, because he just went in his crate. You might want to use a larger pen with a pee pad at one end. But please don't think he is doing it for spite. Either he doesn't know better because the breeder kept them in a small crate, or he just cannot hold it. Sometimes it is a challenge to figure it out, but you need to just keep trying different things. he wants to please you, he just doesn't know how. |

Sometimes, in the early training stages, people punish the dog for pooping on the floor, by putting them in the crate, so that might be teaching them that this is where you want them to go. |

Nancy...Mason was in a crate that gave him just enough room to stand, turn around until a month ago when I got Paris and decided to try them both in one crate. I did not know they could not be crated together. I will say that his pooping in the crate has decreased from every night to maybe 3 times a week now that he is crated with Paris. So I thought this was progress. Guess that's not the case, huh:-) It never occurred to me that she would pick up that habit. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I do use an enzyme cleaner when cleaning up their mess. I don't make them wait that much longer. Sometimes instead of taking Paris out in 45 mins, I take her out in 1 hr and she does hold it that long. She also does nothing overnight during 8 hrs.,so she's not my issue. Mason goes out with her and does pee about every 4 hrs, so technically he's not being MADE to hold it. He just can go longer. When they are out of the crate, she is tethered to me and he just stays put and go where I go. He does not go all over the house. He usually just does it in the kitchen and the family room. And let me add, he poops on my carpet only once a week, so not TOO often, I just don't want it happeing at all. He doesn't really have the run of the house. Know what I mean? You have been very helpful. I will NOT let them sleep together any longer at night. If I get an x-pen, does it have to be just for him or can they be in it together? I actually had him gated off in a room with a pee pad at night for about 9 months after he constantly would shower himself with poop in his crate. LOL, but I really wanted to eventually have him in a crate at night and not in that room. He did use the pad in there, by the way. Thanks for your input. |

He was never punished for pooping by being put in the crate. He was not my first puppy, so I had been through training before and knew not to do that. I've ready countless articles and books to resolve this problem. It just appears that he won't get it, I guess. |

My yorkie is 12 weeks & does not like being in the crate. I give her chew toys but does not settle down from whining & jumping to go to sleep. What can I do to get her to sleep in the crate. |
If you're talking about her sleeping in the crate while you are in your bed, can she see you. If you're crating her during the day while you're home, can she see you. These wee lil babies feel more secure if they can see their humans. |
