Bed Time is Becoming a Nightmare
 

Max has a crate next to my bed. The crate has a comfy bed in it and a couple of bones to chew on. For the first couple of weeks, Max would go in there without issue and go to sleep. He would wake up whining at 3am and I would take him potty and successfully put him back in his crate. He would then wake up whining at 6am. At 6am, I'm not quite ready to wake up, so I put him back in his crate. He never stayed there, so I put him in my bed with a bully stick and after 5 minutes he's sleeping.

Now is a different story. He won't even go in the crate to sleep unless he's already sleeping and I transport him. 2 nights ago I did just that at 10pm and at 12am he was crying. I took him potty, put him back in the crate and he whined and barked. I put him in my bed. After 15 minutes he fell asleep and I transported him to his crate. He woke up 2 hours later barking. Again, I took him potty, as I'm not sure if that's what he needs. He always goes potty. When I put him back in the crate he's whining and screaming again, so I put him back in my bed. He stayed in my bed for 3 hours and slept, although I didn't sleep at all for fear he would fall off the bed. This has continued through the night both 2 days ago and last night.

Last night at 3am when I put him back in the crate after potty he screamed, but I didn't pick him up. Obviously I've trained him at this point that when he screams he gets to go in mommy's bed. He cried for 1/2 hour and eventually feel asleep - for 2 hours:rolleyes:

Please help. For the first couple of weeks, he slept wonderfully in his crate. There was even one night he slept straight from 11-6am without waking up. If I know he doesn't need anything (potty/food), am I supposed to just leave him in his crate screaming? Do I ignore him? Do I put him in my bed?

I haven't slept in days:(

I think aslong as you know he dosnt need potty/food then you should leave him in the crate even if he cries.
I know its horrible, I hate the sound of Poppy crying and its so hard not to pick them up... but we need our sleep so we can look after them properly dont we :)
Just keep in mind when he's crying that its just for attention and he's not hurt, it might take a few more nights but he will eventually know that crying dosnt get him everything he wants :) Good luck!

Ah Ha! Another Mommie being trained! Puppies love to sleep with Mommie! They crave the warmth and security they get when sleeping next to their most favorite being in the whole world! If you're worried about him falling off the bed... get some old, thick comforters and cover the floor around the bed so if he does fall, he'll have a cushiony landing. Or get some bed rails. This is assuming that you're okay with him sleeping in bed with you. If not, don't do it and he won't know what he's missing... oh, too late for that! Or, get a sleeping bag and sleep on the floor with him... to see if he'll sleep through the night with you. I think Yorkies sleeping in bed is one benefit of Yorkie ownership... it makes them so happy and really gives them a sense of belonging. When people don't allow it, they are missing out on so much!

I would love him to sleep on the bed, but just not yet. He has no sense of heights yet and will walk off anything no matter how high it is.

I remember when Cooper wasn't quite potty trained yet. One night he was in the bed, just waking up and I said "ok Coopy let's go potty". So he went to the foot of the bed and peed:rolleyes:

For now, I want Max in his crate until he's a little bigger and potty trained. He's very squirmy and I don't want to have to watch him all night in bed.

Bed rails LOL....no.

Aw! Coopie's such a good boy! Always does what Mommie says! Some folks keep a pee pad on the bed just for accidents. Or when you're old like me and can't get out of bed quick enough!

Found out one of mine is alarm trained... alarm went off and she ran to the head of the bed and flopped right on DH's head. Full body slammed him, she did. Too funny! Of course, he didn't think so!

Oh I don't want to talk about pee pads. Max runs with them through the house and shreds them. I can't stop it. I see I'm going to have a very well behaved dog.

Tink does that too! Or used to. I don't know why she stopped... now it's just every now and then... her new thing is getting into my recycle paper box... she comes out with prescription labels stuck all over her face!:D

(giggling) This is exactly why all three of mine sleep with me! ;)

Although a piece of advice that I suffered through and still do at least 1 night a week.

Everytime my Yorkie would wake up at night I assumed it was to potty. To this day she STILL wakes up around 2:00 AM at least 1-2 nights a week.

She can clearly hold her urine 8-9 hours, but if she wakes up she doesn't go back to sleep cause she knows we'll take her out to pee.

I would hate to see you end up in that same routine as me. Especially since my Yorkie goes outside to potty. With living in Pa., our temps are extreme either way. Those 2:00 AM potty calls in the middle of January ARE NOT FUN! :(

Sorry of your sleeping troubles! I know with Jackson... he always hated the crate. I mean, I could let him bark and not give in but he would do it for an hour or more so I just gave up. Sooo the first few weeks, I actually slept with the crate ON my bed. I knew he was eventually going to be sleeping on my bed anyways. So he would usually wake up once around 3am, I'd take him to potty, then put him back in the crate (but it was on my bed). After about 3 weeks of this, I decided to let him sleep on my bed but I kept the crate open... well he slept through the entire night on my bed that night and ever since... that's where he's been and rarely woke up again in the middle of the night, lol.

Cooper already does this about 1-3 nights per week:rolleyes:
Now I picture a crate on the bed, bed rails and padding on the floor. The things we do for these cuties.

Mom says leave him in the crate all night long and let him bark for hours.

LOL, I know, ridiculous, right? :rolleyes:

When my dad watched Jackson for me when he was a lil' puppy, he would put the crate on his nightstand.

When I became a first time yorkie owner, I bought a couple of books on caring for the yorkie. One of the books said something like:

Do not allow your yorkshire terrier on your bed unless you are prepared for her to always be there. They can become very comfortable there.

I have had mine sleeping with me since they were babies. The first thing they learned after sitting was how to get up and down the foam stairs to the bed. They always use them too. I suggest you get some stairs to your bed, get into clicker training, and train him to use the stairs, and make room in the bed for them. You might have less space, but you'll get your ZZZzzzzs

Barney - I've got stairs on the bed that I use for Cooper. I also have a clicker that I've never tried. I guess now I need to decide if I'm going to put him in my bed at night or not, and then follow through.

Harley used to have this cute whimper when he had to go potty from his crate. so I'd let him out, he'd go potty, and then he'd go back to bed in his crate. well one night he figured out this whimper meant out of crate which = play time. So if he whinned I put him in his bathroom area (we grid train), walked away, and ignored him for 10 minutes, no toys, just the potty, most of hte time he ignored the potty, so in the crate he went and I ignored him... it felt terrible, but now he's good. He sleeps through the night, and has graduated to having his own room with his potty in there, so now I don't even get barked at to feed him in the mornings... he plays with his toys until I bring him breakfast, he's quiet unless he thinks I'm going to walk by his room without saying morning.

It sucks to ignore them, but in the end it develops good behavior from them, and it usually only takes a few times ignoring him for him to figure out that quiet gets the attention.... another thing I do, if you are letting them out, always make them get thier feet off the doors before opening, they'll figure out that quiet/down = getting out...

I feel your pain Karen. The first 5 weeks after having Scarlett home, I would spend at least part of the night lying on the floor beside her crate with my hand stuck through the bars. The only way she would fall and stay asleep was if her head was on my hand. I was gradually able to get her to fall asleep and slowly decreased the time I spent lying there. We did have a couple of nights whining for a few minutes when I first decided to hold my ground and sleep in my bed from minute one. It only lasted about 3 days.

Now, she settles in and goes to sleep by herself around 10-11, wakes up around 2 to go pee and then back to sleep until the alarm goes off around 6. Well, most nights any way. She's all thrown off because of her vaccinations this weekend and has days and nights completely reversed. She decided that 1 a.m. this morning was a great playtime. And she didn't go back to bed until after I left at 8 to go take my daughter to the dentist. :(

What is Cooper doing during all of this? Do you think that Cooper would be amenable to sleeping IN the crate with Max for a while? It might help settle Max down enough to start sleeping through most of the night.
