Pees in crate -- not ready for training? My 13-week-old Morkie pees and poops in his crate. It's very small (just enough room to stand and turn around), and I've removed all bedding. This morning he had some water at 8:00, then I took him out at 8:15 (no pee), 8:30 (no pee), and 8:45 (no pee). At 8:50 he peed in the crate, with me sitting 5 feet away. Do you think he's not ready for crate-training? Julie |

I've read in about 100 places that the crate should be really small - just big enough to stand, turn around, and lie down - so that the puppy can't eliminate in one end and sleep in the other, and also that removing bedding may help because the bedding soaks up the pee. You disagree? Is that for when they are a little older? |

farrah is 9 months old and still will poo in her bed and sleep on it. I feed her at 5am once a day so that hopefully she will void it all day long (also not a scheduled pooper) She still seems to have some 8 out of 10 nights. An example was this morning at 3:45am she had poo in her crate and at least was barking for me to come and clean it. And she had her last potty outside at 10pm. last night. Sorry I am not a help for your problem but give it time and consistency. Yorkies need a routine. |
I would love to use pee pads, but my husband doesn't want to. (Of course, I'm the one at home all day, trying to take the puppy out all the time while my 3-year-old and 1-year-old are doing who knows what inside!). He thinks dogs should go outside. Plus his parents have a 10-year-old Morkie, and they never used pads. But they do live in Seattle, where it doesn't get nearly as cold as it does here. Do a lot of people use pads for tiny dogs? Is it hard to later teach them to go outside? I've now set up the ex-pen, lined with pee pads, several toys, crate at one end with bed inside and no door. Maybe he'll learn to like the crate this way. Cooper is my first dog ever, so I'm in much need of help. Thank you! Julie |
We have a puppy going on five months old. When we first got her at twelve weeks she would pee in her crate. I put a washable pee pad in there at night and she would use that. Now I don't put a pee pad in there she sleeps all night but I do get her up to go potty on a pee pad in the kitchen. We are training her for the inside and it is working out great. When they are little they can't hold their pee they have to go several times especially in the day. I also make the crate a fun thing and lots of toys. I learned on this site about bullysticks and that works great when she is in the crate. And yes I did alot of washing but I keep her clean and always a warm fleece blantket. Thanks everybody on Yt for all the good imformation. Also our baby still has mistakes and we never holler at her. Lots of patience and love and this will work out for you. In the long run your baby will learn ; enjoy her and give her lots of love. Also I have the bolt on 8 oz. cups so she has food and water at all times especially at night. Sue |

New puppies are a huge blessing but can also be a challenge! It sounds to me like your bundle of joy needs more space inside its crate: you want him/her to be comfortable. I like to think of my dog's crate as its bedroom -- she has enough room to sleep and move around while she's playing with her toys. I also think consistency will be helpful in your situation: take the puppy out at the same times and be patient -- eventually your routines will match! I would also leave the bedding inside the crate for comfort. |
