Training to fetch? Kimchee will get the ball when I throw it to her but she'll only come back about half way and then lay down. She never brings it to me. I tried using treats but she won't even go for those! I really want her to play fetch because it's a great energy dispenser :D Any tips on how I can teach her how to bring the ball back to me? |
I kind of had to teach Jackson this, too. I would put him on a long 50 ft line, throw the ball all the way out, and if he didn't keep coming all the way, I'd just give a gentle tug on the leash... I kept treats in my pocket so we did the trade off, I'd give him a treat every time he brought the ball all the way back to me. When he didn't get the ball, I would just wait. I wouldn't go pick it up for him, I'd wait for him to pick it up, then give him the treat. Now Jackson loves to fetch! He will still only do it indoors or in our backyard though. He has no interest when we go to the dog park for example. But oh well it's a great way to drain energy at home! Now I just have 3 tennis balls (I get the Air Squeakers from Kong, he likes things that squeak) and I throw one, he brings one back, then we trade and I throw the other, etc. |
I actually thought it was hard to teach. I just used treats with her and used her favorite toys. I would throw it and get really excited and call her name until she came up to me and give her a treat. If she stopped halfway, I would tell her "nuh uh" and take the toy and have her sit in front of me and throw it again and attempt to lure her back with an excited voice and give her a treat when she successfully brought it back to me. Now she knows when I say fetch to bring her toys back with her :D Its super cute! |
Kimchee runs to get the ball no problem. But once she gets it she looks at me as if to say, "It's mine now! Get your own!" I'll have to try it with the long leash. Hopefully this works! |
Hi, use 2 balls, one you throw, and when he fetches that one call his name and show him the other ball. When he comes back say drop it, when he drops the ball throw the other one and say get it. My trainer taught it to us it really works.. good luck |
