Need help with "COME" Ruger will come, usually, when holding a treat or when confined in a small park or the front yard. However, when I take him off leash at a large park he just runs around and is easily distracted by other dogs, kids, bicycles and kids on bicycles. Today he freaked me out by running into traffic to get to another dog. Fortunately we live in a small town and drivers will stop for just about anything. He is almost always on leash, but the other day he jumped out of the car when I was getting out, so we need to work on this fast before he gets hurt. He's 10 months old. |
Our trainer always stressed that when using "come" you have to make yourself more interesting than anything else. Don't yell come in a "you're in trouble" tone. Would you run towards that? Sound excited and welcoming and see if that helps |

Always remember, safety first, so make sure that you only have him off leash in situations where you are totally comfortable he can't get hurt - preferably because there is a fence in the way. I would say most dogs will never be 100% trustworthy with "Come": if there's reaaaaally good food on the ground, or a squirrel, or another dog that wants to play, or another dog that needs to be scared away, that will come first. So always consider your surroundings. |
