How young is TO young? I have my little girl Poppy who is 5 1/2 weeks old. The question i wanna ask may seem silly lol, is it to young to train her? Can i start to train her to use her Puppy Pads or is she to young to understand? She has been trying to bite my fingers... can i tell her ''no'' when she does this and will she learn or again is she to young? xx |
:) when we got poppy she was 6 weeks old , straight away we started puppy pad training her , when she woke up from asleep we would put her on her pad , if she did a wee wee on the carpet we just said naughty in a deeper voice and put her on the pad , :) it takes time but eventually it just clicks ;) be prepared for lots of little accidents , she is very young , :) i am glad she is doing ok , love jill n poppy xx :aimeeyork |
You should treat her as her mother would at this age. Put a pad in her pen so she can get used to pottying there, she is too young to be on the floor and running around freely...if she bites at your fingers, react with a yelp..her mother would correct her with a growl or smack with a paw on her nose..good luck |
If you're firm and stick to the same rules, she will begin to learn. Some things take time ... especially since she is sooo young & can't always hold it. But I would certainly try! So far as the biting ... she didn't get to learn about bite inhibition from her furmomma so she has to learn it from you. Try a little yelp when she bites ( that worked super well for my little one) and stop playing for 30 seconds. Hope this helps! |
Thanks everyone :) thats just what i needed to hear Thank you :D :D |
I just got Toby this past saturday and he is 3 months, now my question is when should i start training him |
At 12 weeks he is old enough now for training, potty and sit,stay,down... good luck |

Don't punish for mistakes -- especially when you don't see them happening -- as the puppy won't understand why you're doing it. But DO praise when they do it right. Think of training a puppy as kind of like breaking in a boyfriend -- both respond very well to positive reinforcement. Oh -- and clean up the mistakes as quickly and thoroughly as possible so the puppy doesn't use the smell as a cue to go there again. Sounds so simple, and has been many times with other dogs. Not so sure it's that easy with a Yorkie though -- will be starting that experience next month. |
Thank you all |
No good breeder would release a puppy at 5 1/2 weeks. Barring tragedy (you found the puppy and can't find the mother), the puppy needed to stay with his mother and sibs, because puppies learn a lot in weeks 5-8, about socialization with other dogs, in particular. In fact, most good breeders of tiny dogs don't release them for adoption until 12 weeks. I'm not saying all that to fuss at Furbutt, but it's important that potential Yorkie owners know it. To address Furbutt's question: puppies are learning all the time. It's probably too early for potty training to be effective, because Yorkie's may not have the sphincter control to "hold it" until 16 weeks or so. But that doesn't mean you can't practice "potty management," putting the puppy where you want him to potty every time there's a trigger (eating, waking up, playing, or 60 minutes have passed since the last potty). That will create an association with the place (be it pee pad or outside) that the dog will use when he can. And you can certainly teach "Uh-uh!" to interrupt unwanted behaviors, teach name, etc., etc. The most important thing you can teach is love - that you will love and protect him. He's older now - best of luck!! |
