Barking Problems
 

Hi, so my 1 and a half year old yorkie girl Mocha has issues with barking. If someone knocks or rings the door bell she would bark like there was no tomorrow, I pick her up and try to stop her but she continues anyways. It's the same with going on walks she see's someone and she will bark at them and she wont stop and when she see's other dogs she will bark at them, even friendly dogs it's okay for her to sniff them but when they sniff her she will get angry and bark at them. I'm at the end of my ropes i dont know what to do about this the barking is non-stop and i just dont know what to do.

Wish I could be of more help, but mine will usually stop when I say a firm "NO".
Have you tried the "pebbles in the can" method? Shaking the can and saying "NO" when they are doing something undesirable? I've not tried it, but heard of it several times. Sounds like she's being a little "alpha" and you need to take back your control as leader. Have you watched the Dog Whisperer? He works on that kind of behavior a lot.

I have one Yorkie that is a barker and her trainer told me to spray her too. It really works if I am in the house when she starts to bark. I don't even have to spray her any more. She sees the bottle and stops, but......if I'm not there, she barks non stop. Has anyone used one of those ultra sonic things they advertise on TV?

I would suggest the "no", then the penny in a bottle or the water spray. I tried all those with Duke and each worked for a while. He's almost 3 now and has calmed down on his own a bit (knock on wood) but still bark at the door bell or some very specific people in the neighborhood and my only way of getting him to stop is to keep walking away as he is barking. It can be really frustrating but that's the only thing that works for us.

The can trick didnt really work =(, she would stop for a few seconds and think im playing with her attack it, and then start barking again.

I was in my vets office one day with two of my babies, a women asked me if yorkies are barkers I said yes and when you have 6 dogs that bark it can get bad. A lady sitting in the room happened to be a dog trainer , she aked me if I tried a small air horn ? I said no ,wouldnt that be to load ? she said you use the small ones for boats, She said try it, it works. I talked to the vet about it . She said to try it. So I stopped at the local K-mart and got the smallest one I could find. The next day as a neighbor waked past the front of the house walking her dog. I said okay I am going to try this horn. I said look Mom has a horn and shook the horn, I said "Stop", Mom is going to get the horn. They kept barking,So I gave 1 small tap to the horn. They all stopped and looked at me. I said Horn.That is all I have to say when they all start barking. I say "wheres my horn" they all stop. To this day I do not even have to blow it except when they get really worked up and do not listen. I say where is my horn they stop and go lay down.It is loud but not as bad as I thought it would of been. It works real good.

I loved the way you connected the word horn with the sound, and now all you have to do is threaten them. :D I see nothing wrong with this type of training, you are making an unpleasant noise that matches their unpleasant noise. I use to use coins in a can with Joey, but they didn't work when we had the cable guy here doing work, and Joey was going nuts. I got the "Bark Repeller" at Amazon, and have been very happy with the results. It makes an unpleasant noise that humans can't hear, and all I have to do is point it at him and he quiets down. I do let him do his regular barking, but he has to quite down when I say enough. I've wondered about the air horns, and that will be my next step if this stops working.

Belle is about 1 1/2 years old, her hobby and lifes passion is barking:( I tried the can, she also thinks that is great, a new toy to attack. Spray bottle worked at first then that became fun too. I have used the ultra sound thing and sometimes it works and sometimes she's so worked up that you could blow a cruise ship horn at her and she'd just look at you like "really!".. I get emails from Maltese Maniac and yesterday a lady was on there worried because her Morkie (which Belle is also) hardly ever barks, she was wondering if that was normal. I had to reply to that, just couldn't pass it up. Told her to count her blessings while she can still hear herself count. It's the Yorkie attitude that over rules the Maltese calmness. I can't believe the things Belle feels the need to bark at. She stands at the front window (back feet on the chair, front feet on the window sill and waits for new "prey". If they get past without her permission she assumes they are coming in the patio door so she makes a mad dash there to check it out, then back to the chair. We are still working on no bark but I think she reads a chapter ahead of me at night. Now she's figured how to jump at the TV to turn it off! Never a dull minute with her but we love her to death. Even when my dh and I both lose our hearing, we will still love her!:eek:

Hi Brenda, Would you mind giving me a link to where I could get one of those and what it looks like? I have no idea about an air horn, but it sounds like it might be something I need for Bailey! I bought the Bark Repeller, and while it works on my BF's older dogs, it no longer bothers Bailey:rolleyes:

The sporting goods department at Walmart carries various airhorns. I purchased a pocketsize one that I carry with me for protection. My concern about using it as a bark deterrent is that it is very loud and if used improperly, I fear it could damage hearing.

Max is in love with his powerful voice. He doesn't bark all day, but when he does speak, ouch!

My biggest challenge is finding a way to correct stubborn Max while not upsetting sensitive Teddy. After trying all the usual tips and tricks, including the Bark Repeller (Max isn't phased by it), I have gone back to old fashioned training methods and we are having more success.

I tried the "bark off" device and it didn't work the way it's supposed to. One problem is that you don't really know if it is making the sound or not b/c there is no light or other indicator that the sound went off. The other problem is, that all of my five heard the tone if they barked or not. Our little Minnie who is very sensible got very confused and refuses now to go to the back yard. All our 'barkers' did either ignore the sound or didn't hear it. It also works only in a distance of ~20 feet and I was chasing through the back yard to get the thingy in the right distance... :eek:

I'm sending the device back tomorrow... Oh... and be careful, even though they tell you it's only $10 for two (plus shipping and handling) but somehow I ended up paying $44... :eek::eek::eek: I saw them yesterday at walmart for $9.95...

I do not use the horn to stop the barking if it does not involve all 6 of the dogs. When using the horn you are not holding it down long. Just a quick 1 second. You do not put it close to the dogs . Hold it above your head. The !st one I got was the personal one. I just got the larger one so I have it on hand. But I do not need to use it often because they know what it is and they stop.It is loud but not as load as I thought it would of been.

OMG I got stuck paying 44.00 to what is up with that and I agree I don't know if it's working correctly or not as it does not faze on Andy at all .What a waste of money .
