Tall, wet grass = no go outside Honestly, the grass isn't that tall. But it rained today. I took the little stinker out twice, saying "go pee," and twice he ran back to the door. The third time, he ran onto the porch and peed there! I know the problem is the wet grass... but I really want him to potty outside (and NOT on the porch). Any ideas? Any way to desensitize him to the wet grass? Failing that, any surface I could put down in a small part of the doggy yard that that he wouldn't find objectionable? |
Are you closed to using pee pads? It sure has been a life savor for us. Mine will use the pad if they can't get outside. It's also wonderful if you travel, and have to go into motels. Nothing worse that having to take the pup out in a strange area in the dark, or when it's raining. |
I have pee pads, though he doesn't seem to "get" the whole idea, and will go right beside them. But I really want him to go outside. We have a motor home, and so won't be staying in motels much, if ever. We have two doggy doors at our house, one from the house itself and one from the screened porch, both leading to securely fenced yards. And I have two larger dogs - Kerry Blue Terriers - and I don't want the smell of pee (etc.) in the house to tempt them. I can be very persistent... but I can't make the grass not grow nor the rain not fall! |

take him out on a non-retractable leash to the spot you want him to go on. give him the 6 foot diameter around you and thats it. give your potty cue word and then just stand there with him until he goes. it may take a while but he will eventually go. If its been 30 minutes, he still hasn't gone, and your getting tired of standing there then carry him back inside and put him in his crate for 5 minutes (make sure crate isn't big enough for him to pee on one side and lay on the other). after 5 minutes carry him back outside on the leash and repeat. Once he goes, give him lots of praise. I got morgan when she was 13 weeks old around this time of year 4 years ago. we did that exact thing in every type of weather. i stood out in the rain for 30 minutes with her until she went. with the bad weather (rain, wind, snow, wet grass) you may have to stand out there longer for the first few times but he will learn that the faster he potties the faster he gets to go inside and out of the rain. Morgan is fully potty trained to go outside. never used pee pads |
I have 1 in particular that will not go when it's raining or wet outside. I can't just open the door and say "go potty" like I normally do. I have to pick her up, go away from the door, almost in the middle of the grass in the area where she would go, put her down, step back some(so she has a little independence..hahaha), then quickly say go potty. On her way slowly trying to yet again, come back inside, she usually goes because I continuously say "go potty". I understand what you mean because even though I do have pp pads in the house, I prefer them to still go outside when at all possible. It is nice to know they will use the pads if need be though. I will say though that there have been times when I gave up and just let her come back inside, but I took her out again after some time went by & did it again. good luck |

The coach is beautiful! We're thinking about our next MH, so I'll factor that in. Thanks, Kalina82. I think that's good advice. Because I'm taking him out in fenced yards, I haven't been leashing him... but that allows him to run back to the door. I'll put a leash by the door and start doing that... just staying with him until he goes. Starting Wednesday. Through Monday morning, I'm still dog-sitting my son's American Mastiff puppy (only two weeks older than 15 week old Dante) and his American Eskimo, and supervising those two puppies is already wearing me out (tho the mastiff has been great about using the doggy door on his own). Then Tuesday we go to Knoxville (3 hr drive) for my female Kerry Blue Terrier's chemo... So Wed I can start focusing on potty training. I'm willing to endure some boredom and weather to get this done! |
