Peeing on Throw Rugs
 

Hi Everyone,

My 5 month old baby is 95% potty trained (pee pads, shes in a condo downtown) but anytime there is a throw rug (i have hardwood floors) she pees on it! I had to pick all of them up off the floor and wash them about 4 times. Since she kept doing it, I just picked them up and never put them back. I have told her "No" when I catch her and immediately direct her to the pee pad but she still does it. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?

What kind of pee pads do you use? Sometimes if washable pads are used without the scent attractant added, dogs will have difficulty distinguishing between pee pads and throw rugs.

We use washable pee pads and do not have throw rugs just for this reason. They think they are doing good and just dont understand :(

I've had to remove all my throw rugs too....this is a con for peepad training.:(

Another possibility to help pups distinguish between pee pads and throw rugs is to keep the pee pad in one predictable place. Don't spread them throughout the house. More targets do not equal more success. :p

I keep one in the daytime living area, and one in the sleeping area.

We no longer have any rugs...we wear slippers in the colder months lol.

I'm having a similar problem.. I think. My puppy (Yorkie/Maltese mix) is 16 weeks old and he's doing really well with the pee pad training (I live in a condo too). During the day, I keep him in the main area of the condo, which is the living room and dining room. The kitchen is blocked off with a gate. I keep the 2 bedroom doors closed most of the time because those rooms are carpeted. Sometimes I let him in the bedroom though. Usually it's if I'm taking a shower or doing something in the bedroom for more than a couple minutes. If I leave him in the main area by himself, or in his crate, he whines and barks.. which is another issue I'm working on. Anyway, he often pees just a tiny bit on the carpet. Usually when I'm not looking. He knows where his pad is. Last time I was in the shower, when I got out, he had left a little tiny puddle on the carpet in the bedroom, but he had also been out to the main area to poo on his pad. And we have a big area rug in the main room and he doesn't pee on it. I don't get it. :confused: Whenever he does this, I show him to his pad, which is how we trained him in the first place, but he's still leaving little puddles in the bedroom. If anyone knows why or how to stop it, I'd love your help! Sorry for hijacking your thread. :p

We had to remove all ours too. They can't tell the difference.

That is EXACTLY how Bella is. About the barking. Try Rescue Remedy. Its all natural anti-stress drops for dogs. I had that same exact problem with bella and her crate but now she does fine! I give her a treat before I go so she has something to gnaw on for a while.

my Benjamin (Maltese) did the same thing. I pulled up all the throw rugs and it cured the problem. When he was little he was in a pen with his siblings and mom (at the breeders) and they had washable pads..i think he just saw the rugs as another pad when he came here. Now he is doggie door trained so he doesn't look for pads anymore! :)

Lane can't tell the difference between the two either. I have to keep the bathroom doors shut or else she will use the bath mats thinking they are her pad. I'm glad I'm not the only one! Sorry that isn't very helpful.

hahaha! My Mia started doing this and I, too, thought the little dear was just finding the comfort of the throw rugs too irresistible - but guess what ladies... she is MARKING! :D I really didn't want to believe it - but it is true.

I washed the rugs with Natures Miracle, bought new ones -- everything you can think of and she still peed on it! :eek: What really confirmed it was that Max has never once peed on any of them. :rolleyes:

My friend had beautiful oriental rugs in her living room that her little girl used to like to pee on. She bought the spray that you put on that the dogs don't like to keep her off the rug.
