I don't want to miss that "window" so to speak. Thanks so much for the reply! | You are right to be concerned about vaccinations. He needs to be finished with all his vaccinations plus two weeks for immunity. Until then, he is at a high risk for deadly puppy disease like parvo. At only 12 weeks, his vaccinations are only about 50% effective.
Puppies get antibodies from their mother when they nurse which can actually block the earlier vaccines. He'll be about 18 weeks before he can be fully immunized. In one study of a cross section of different puppies the age at which they were able to respond to a vaccine and develop protection covered a wide period of time. At six weeks of age, 25% of the puppies could be immunized. At 9 weeks of age, 40% of the puppies were able to respond to the vaccine. The number increased to 60% by 16 weeks, and by 18 weeks of age, 95% of the puppies could be immunized. Parvovirus: Serious Diarrhea in Puppies & Dogs
For now, playing with your other dog is great. If you have friends whose dogs are fully vaccinated and the right size, you could have a little play date. You can take him out safely in a little bag and have neighbors or friends feed him a little treat to get him used to strange people. This also helps him get used to strange noises. |
