Yorkie chasing cats 1 Attachment(s) My 1 yr old female yorkie is running out of the door and chasing cats. She chased the neighbors cat across the street. Just imagine me chasing after her in my sleepy and no shoes on a rainy day. By the time I caught up with her she was confronting 2 large cats. My baby is 2.5 to 3lbs. Those cats could've had a snack. Does anyone have any suggestions on 1. stopping her from running out of open doors 2. stopping her from chasing cats. |
You probably won't be able to keep her from chasing cats, some dog's just do it because nature is telling them to. You do need to stop this behavior ASAP, cats can do a ton of damage to the small dogs, make them look like they've been in a fight with razor blades. Eye damage, it gets ugly. I recommend putting her on a leash no matter where you are going out to, train her to sit before you open the door, if when you touch the door she gets up take your hand away from the handle, tell her to sit again when she successfully sits through opening the door without getting up walk out the door with her, if she tries to dart ahead of you, stop moving. (remember to keep her on a leash!) It'll take a while to keep her from darting out of the door, but you have to teach her. So many bad things can happen to them when they do that. Sorry I only have amateur advice to give, but in the very least, stop letting her run off leash, for her sake. |
Deuce thanks for the information. i just want you to know it wasn't a simple case of her going outside without her leash. i was walking into my garage and didn't know hubby had the door up. i was sooo afraid i wouldn't reach her in time. i will work on having her sit at all the doors. my yorkie likes to nip my feet when i walk by. have you heard of this before? i ws wondering if it's considered play or dominance. not sure  i will keep you posted on how it goes. :D |
Is there any way you could put a different barrier (ex. baby gate, fencing, etc.) around the door? Perhaps something you could step over, but she can't get over. That way if she does get out, she still won't be able to go where she wants. |
daniellealberta THAT'S A GOOD IDEA! now why didn't i think of that. lol i will definitely put a gate in front of the garage door and still work on training her to sit at the door. thanks alot! :D |
I've been working on the sitting at the door. so far it's not going so well. but patience is a virtue. lol |
