Rotten teeth Hi there, I just bought a yorkie, and unfortunately not doing as much research I was duped by someone who sells yorkies from puppy mills and has not responded to any of my questions after I purchased him. My yorkie's teeth are rotten but he's supposed to be only 1 year and a few months old. The doctor said that my yorkie is probably older than that. He showed me the yorkie's baby teeth which comes out after a yorkie is 6 months old, and said that those teeth shouldn't be rotting off if he was indeed a year and a few months old. I am taking him back to the vet tomorrow to get his rotten teeth extracted and get a dental cleaning. Is there a way to find out how old my yorkie really is? I'm not sure if the adult teeth are rotten too but I'm scared. Are the baby teeth supposed fall off naturally past a certain age? Thank you for your help. |
From what I read, baby teeth fall off between 12-14 months for yorkies. If he has a few still, does that mean no one took care of his teeth and he's still as young as he seems?:/ |

When i brought Sophie home at 18 months old her teeth were so awful smelling. She had infection and was put on antibiotics before she had her baby teeth, that didn't fall out, pulled. I believe there were about 7-9 of them. She also had her remaining teeth cleaned and was spayed at the same time Doing well now although she hates having her teeth brushed.:animal36 |

I'm right there with you. Knox has two beautiful rows of teeth top and bottom including 8 canine teeth, four on top and four on bottom. He's about 8 months old. I guess I'm going to have to get them pulled. I have been playing a lot of tugofwar and stuff but none have turned loose. The vet didn't want put him to sleep just to take out milk teeth at our last appointment unless I was willing to neuter him, but he's a good boy, doesn't hump, and is housebroken, so I don't want to have him cut. I brush his teeth every other day, so bad breath isn't an issue. He eats premium dry dog food, which probably helps too. Still, I'm probably going to go ahead and have them removed, which will probably be expensive since he has so dang many. His teeth look like the ones in the movie Alien, teeth within teeth. lol |
You can't tell the age of a dog/puppy by looking at its remaining baby teeth. My Yorkies still have their baby teeth that never fell out, even though they are 3 & 5 years old. The vet says it's OK as long as it's not hurting them. I could get them pulled but they'd have to be under anesthesia for that so I just left them. Yorkies are known for retaining baby teeth just because their mouths are so much smaller than other breeds. If they don't fall out on their own, you can have them pulled when you get the dog/puppy spayed or neutered. |
