When Is it Okay to Leave? We brought our new baby, Dharma, home Saturday. She is doing beautifully! We are crate training her and she loves her "home", as we call her crate. We take her outside about every 3 hours and she hasn't had an accident these past two days. She is settling down great! We were wondering when it would be okay to leave her home alone in her crate for an hour or two. I left her for 20 minutes on Monday while I ran to the pet store while my fiance was at work and she had diarrhea all over the crate. She does have coccidia so it might of been due to that, or anxiousness of being home alone. (She is being treated! :-)) I want her to be comfortable with her new home. We want to leave her for an hour to start with so she gets comfortable with us leaving. We eventually need to leave her home alone but we want to do it right. Is it too early to leave her home alone? Of course when we leave, she will be in her crate. We appreciate all of the help! Thanks! |
Congratulations on the new addition to your family. :) The answer to your question depends on Dharma's age and weight, and the treatment she is receiving for coccidia. If she still has bouts of diarrhea, I would monitor her closely so that she isn't left in her crate after having an episode. Hypoglycemia and dehydration would also be a concern to me, especially if she is a pup and small. You want to make sure she has a clean water supply at all times. |

If and when we do leave her. It would only be for an hour or less. I just want her to get used to us leaving, but I don't know if it's too early to do that just yet. |

Because your baby is small, I probably wouldn't push past 2-3 hours without a check. Hopefully someone with more experience with smaller pups will weigh in on how long before you can leave her for more extended periods of time. Best wishes. :) |

We are both teachers who have the summer off. So if we left, it would only be to go to the gym for an hour because she is so small. We are conscious of that. :) Thank you so much for your input! |
Well we took her out and made sure she went potty so we put her in her crate and left. We made no big deal about leaving. We were gone for about an hour. When we got home....diarrhea :(. Maybe we have to start leaving with shorter intervals of time. |

If it is nerves and not illness, then try leaving for a few minutes and return. Repeat many times, gradually increasing your time away. Don't make a big deal when you leave or return -- be as matter of fact as possible. Leave the television or radio on, give her toys or something safe to keep her occupied. Leave a shirt that you have worn or something with your scent in your baby's crate. I also read another suggestion from a breeder/exhibitor on another thread to drape a little blanket over the crate. We drape a towel over the top for my younger boy who sleeps in his wire crate. |
