Petco Training Classes Has anyone gone to the training classes at Petco? I signed Marchello up for this Saturday. We've been trying to train him ourselves but we haven't been successful and house training is a must because we live in an apartment. I was just curious if any one has used the service and if anyone was satisfied with it. |
close ... We are about to graduate from Petsmart's puppy training. I can't imagine it being all that different from Petco. It's been useful for me because as she learns in class she's really learning where to make (I live in apartment too so those pads need to be used!) I had taught Kasha Sit, Down & her name before so some things were basic but the more places learned in the better. I'll certainly be signing up for more training classes. |
The problem with Petco and Petsmart training is that the service you get varies greatly based on the quality of the individual trainer. The best thing to do is meet and talk with the trainer, and observe them before making a decision. Its impossible to make a general statement about their trainers. I had one terrible experience at Petsmart with a trainer and had to pull my dog out of the class, then I had another amazing experience there with a different trainer. She had yorkies of her own, knew the breed, and was a pleasure to work with, we had fun and learned a lot. Hopefully you will get a great trainer and all will go well for you. One question though... how do they housebreak them at Petco? |
Thank you both for your replies. I'll have to keep that in mind what you said about the trainer Armani. We're going to go to class an hour early because the class actually started last week but there were only two other dogs. So I should get the time to talk to her and feel her out before the class starts. I have no clue how they would do house breaking at Petco but I'm willing for any tips I can get. He won't use the pads, he won't poop outside, so I have no idea what to do with him. |
I got very lucky with trainers then! :-) They don't really "do" housebreaking there. They teach you concepts. (consistency,positive reinforcement, timing, patterns ... the no rubbing of the nose) I think they just learn who is boss ... because they figure out the treats come from the moms/dads. lol. |
Not sure what they do but I think I heard or read that they learn things like sit, lie down, heel, etc. Good luck and let us know how it goes. |
I loved my Petsmart training classes with Wobie. I was lucky to have a yorkietalk member as the class instructor, so maybe thats why it worked so well for us. |
We did not do training classes at Petco but we did them at Petsmart. The classes were basic and the training was mostly on leash. So for that reason, I did not like it. To learn some basic commands, it was worthwhile but for any depth of obedience training, I felt I needed to go elsewhere. Good luck! |
We're halfway through puppy classes at Petco with Cody. We're pleased with the classes but I'm sure it depends on the trainer. |
Another vote on the trainer. Ruger graduated from Petco puppy school, but before he went I had a talk with the trainer. He was great, and helped me with any questions I asked. Petco, Petsmart or the local pet store. It's all up to the individual trainer. |
I think training classes can really be beneficial, but remember you are the one being trained not your dog. It's up to you, to take the information you've learned and have daily training sessions. Living in an apartment is no different than living in a house when it comes to training. It's important to not give them free range of the house until they've mastered going on a pee pad. You never give them a chance to make a mistake. We kept Joey in a pen with two pee pads, and he never made a mistake. When he was out of the pen, both my eyes were on him, and if he started sniffing around or circling I placed him on a pad. The pads were never far from him. He learned to use a pad much quicker on the wood floors than he learned on the carpeted areas. Washable pads even worked better. I am taking my little one to petco classes, I really think they are helping him, he is going on his 5th week, so hes almost graduating. Let me know how you like the classes :) |
Update!! We've done two classes at Petco and I have to say the trainer is pretty good. We've learned some basic building blocks to commands like leave it and she's shown us how to get him to walk on a loose leash. My only thing is I know my Marchello is going to need more than 6 classes. So I think the class is a nice building block but not enough for us. |
