Advice on marking... Hey guys! I haven't been here in a bit, but I need some advice. My Gizmo (male, 7 mo.) has starting marking. I have him scheduled for neutering on Tuesday, but I might have to wait until next month. Do you think 1. It will help stop the marking if I get it done this week, and 2. do you think it will get worse if I wait. He is driving me nuts! He was doing well for the most part on pottying, then this starts... |
The sooner you can have him neutered, the better. Once the behavior is well established, it is harder to break. If he has begun to mark, neutering alone might not stop the habit. Limit his freedom of movement in your home, supervise closely, and give him a firm "no" when you see him try to mark. Always praise profusely when he potties in the correct place -- outdoors or pad. This will help stop the marking. Some people also advocate using belly bands. |
Well, he has only been doing it for like a week now. So I hope that it takes care of it for the most part when I get him fixed. Until then,he is getting more acquainted with the squirt bottle, which he hates...LOL. Oh, and he is already restricted to the living and kitchen. He might just have to stay in the kitchen for awhile if he keeps peeing on my chair!! :-) |

What drives the marking habit is the hormones. Hormones don't automatically disappear when you have them neutered. It takes a few weeks for the hormones in their body to get out of their system. But, the longer he stays intact the longer he will have hormones driving the behavior. Neutering with the addition of training, and consistency will help eliminate the behavior. Like Maximo said, belly bands help. Just don't use them as a band aid to cover up the problem. |
