Shy Poopers For those of you with dogs who prefer privacy when pooping, what do you and your dogs do on walks? It's not like you can say, "You do your business and I'll keep walking, then we'll meet a couple doors down." :p |
Good question! Mine like to wander off to a corner when they're in the yard, and I usually unleash when we're at the park to let them do their business. But they do go onleash when they have no other option. Speed can be an issue. I just walk them at a time I know they have to go and don't stop until they've done their business. The key is to praise, praise, praise when they get it right and give them a treat. They lose their bashfulness quickly when there's a reward at the end. A trainer told me one time to not let them sniff every thing they come across in search of the perfect poo spot. If it looks like they're gonna go, give them 30 seconds and move on. Eventually, they'll realize it's now or never. Good luck! Here's what you want to avoid! |
Shy pooper That is so cute! Isn't it funny how they have to find....just the right spot...to do their business!!!! I have two yorkies and and older pek. My pek won't go unless you follow her around the yard and watch. She has to have company. |
AprilLove is the only one of mine that is a shy pooper, lol. I love that phrase :D In the yard, she prefers to hide in or behind Hostas or a tree when fertilizing :D On walks, she indicates she has to go, I turn around (she's on leash) then she goes, hahaha, she doesn't like any one watching her |
That is so cute!! you had me laughing bc my Daisy (jack-a-poo) does that to me and I am like common all ready drop it like its hot!!! lol |
hahaha! alaskayorkie, your video made me laugh :D |

Great advice from you and your trainer. My Max isn't bashful, but he gets annoyed with me that I keep him walking at such a fast pace that he has a hard time telling me that he needs to do his stuff. :p Love the Eddie Poo Dance, lol. |
Awww, cute question and funny answers. My little Lexi is not only a shy pooper...she is afraid of it....LOL When she goes potty and it comes out she will run faster then her legs can go to get away from it and hide til you get rid of it :D |
shy pooper That was so darn cute! eddie sure thanks you for all your minutes spent on him!!:) |
Mike that's hilarious! Kaji does the same pacing over the same spot over and over, then he will do a 1080 degree spin until finally he poops. You would think that now that he is only allowed to pee and poop on his piddle pad, he's get it done quicker. NOPE! The pad is only so big, and still he paces up and down, and side to side on the piddle pad, smelling every inch of it, spinning round and round until finally, the job is done. :D He use to not want to poo in front of me, now he asks for me to follow to show me what a good boy he is. He loves the praise that comes with a job well done. He won't go in front of anyone else though. |
LOL. I have a pacing pooper, too. We call it the potty dance. |
Thanks for this post--- I'll try turning around and see what happens! :) |
Uni is not a shy pooper. One of her favorite spots is right in front of the entrance to the movie theaters. |

Ha! Love the video. Eddie actually looks like he's on the verge the *entire* video. His butt is tucked and ready to fire, he just can't pull the trigger. I realized that Thor is a shy pooper. We have a routine where every morning I take him to his pad and tell him "BM". He gets a huge reward for pooping, by far his biggest of the day. Even so, he's usually reluctant. I realized after a while that many times after I gave up, he would run to his other pad, and do it while I was looking the other way. I think it's probably because if he tries to leave his pad and he's not finished, I maneuver him back on. Anyway, now I tell him to BM, and then I walk away to give him the illusion of privacy. I actually think he kind of knows he has to get the poop on the pad, because he used to just poop and run, letting the chips fall where they may. Now when he stands up and it's not completely out, he'll actually wait a few seconds. Despite his reward for going indoors, he still strongly prefers to go outside, again, probably because I interfere less. If we're walking, he just stops dead, and it's over before I know it. He actually pooped in a store the other day. I was shocked, he's never done that before. But he just squatted and did his thing in the blink of an eye. He also likes to run away from it as soon as he's finished. He hates waiting around for me to pick it up. Peeing is another matter entirely. He still occasionally gets a treat for pottying, so he always wants me to see him go. He'll stand on his pad in a very theatrical manner, and then while he goes, he stares straight at me, as if to say, are you getting this? |

Loving your posts about shy poopers! Good to know that our Kenzie isn't the only one lol. When she has to go potty, shell start running around the house like a speeding bullet, then she'll go to her pad and set it free while we pretend we are not looking (but yes, we are). She likes to go potty at this corner at the living room, where we can't watch, but there's a window where the whole neighbourhood can lol! |
