Change of environment and potty training Hi Everyone! Last summer I posted about taking Lucas out to BC to our summer place, which is a long car ride. Everything went really well and at that time, we had him trained to go outside, but still on pee pads occasionally. We are going to be spending the summer out in BC again, in a condo on the 3rd floor of the development. Since last summer, we have used the "jingle bells" on the back door for Lucas to tell us he needs to go. He is AWESOME at it now and only goes outside. My question is, now that we will be switching environments to an apartment/condo style living, with no yard obviously, and on the 3rd floor of the complex, what would you recommend for training? I would prefer not to use potty pads at all, of course, because we did have way more accidents when we used them. However, in the wee hours, it is going to be a pain to go all the way downstairs and out the gate and down the driveway to have him go (we can't let them go inside the complex on our grass). Help! Thanks for your responses :) |
Am I allowed to *bump* this for myself ? We are heading out there soon and I would love any input from the YT family :) |
Change in enviroment will cause issues in potty training. If you don't use potty pads you will have to get up and take him out. I really don't see any other choice. I know some of my smaller ones just can't hold it. In the winter there are times I can't get out my door because of snow so potty pads are great for me. They use them really well too. I bought a fire hydrant for my boys and I put pee pad under it. I wish I didn't have to use them but it is either that or they go anyway. I don't have any carpet in my home so that helps alot. |
Have you considered using one of those portable potty patches? |

Looks like I'll have great legs by summer's end! Lol Thanks guys. Also, Lucas sleeps with me in my bed, but if he is gonna have to hold it longer at night out there, would it be better to have him in his kennel for the night? |
I wouldn't use pads again if you finally got him trained to go outside. I agree on the potty patch idea... or does he really need to go in the middle of the night, or just really early in the AM? Jackson does really well with a change of environment luckily but we've never been on a 3rd floor in condo but he usually sleeps 8-10hrs through the night, thankfully. He has no access to water in the middle of the night so there's no need to potty. |
