Marking... Hi everyone, I'm new to the site :) We have a 2 year old, Mr. Gibbs, who is a darling (except to children) and very smart. He has quite the problem with marking though. We have made all stops - brought him for blood/urine tests (everything came back negative), hired Bark Busters (life time subscription...poor woman!), and are even considering fostering him for a few weeks to get him house trained. He literally marks EVERYWHERE. We can have him out for a long walk where he goes potty and marks along the way, and he will still come in the house and mark. What is going on?! What else can we do? We are in the process of training him to one room at a time to build trust and keeping him on a leash when he's in the house with us. Please help! |
Is Mr. Gibbs neutered? I have no advice about marking, I am lucky Bogie never developed the habit. Have you tried bellybands? It is my understanding that it is hard to break a male from marking once they have the habit. |
Yes, Gibbs is neutered and we feel as though the marking has gotten significantly worse since! It's so strange. What are belly bands?? |

And yes, belly bands are wonderful. What I have done with my guy is teach him first of all what marking is. Everytime he lifts his leg outside I tell him yes, that's marking OUTSIDE, very good boy and give a treat or 2. When he lifts his leg inside I say no, no that's marking INSIDE and it took a few weeks but I haven't caught him lifting his leg inside in a week or two so I think we're on the right track. Maybe that will help you? |
I'm actually from Rotterdam originally! That's so funny. I'm going to definitely look into the belly bands. The woman who works with us through Bark Busters mentioned a medicine that "dries them up" to an extent. I'd rather try anything else before we go to that :( |
