Constant Crying I am sure this is all normal but wanted to get some advice on the best way to handle my 9 week old new puppy constantly crying. She cries every time I am not near her even if she can see me whether she is in her pen, crate or if she is let free to walk around a bit. She is healthy, always in a place where she can see and smell us. My Biggie Smalls (who is now 3 yrs old) cried as a pup but not this bad. I used a can of pennies to correct him which I was told was NOT a good thing. I have been doing my best just to ignore her but when it goes from whining to whaling for more than 20 minutes it gets a bit tough. Is it best to just continue to ignore her? I want to ensure I do my best to not create any separation anxiety. |
Anyone have any advice? My patience is running out. Ignoring her for over an hour is not helping and seriously making me run out of patience. Took her to vet and vet says she is healthy. |
Oh the poor thing. Why do breeders let them go so young. It breaks my heart when this happens. It could have been prevented had the breeder kept her a few more weeks. Not sure what to suggest. Does your older dog like her? Will, the older dog stay with her? Is she in a crate or an xpen? |
Awww, poor baby. How long have you had her? She's just so young that it may take her a bit to settle in if you just got her. Also, perhaps one of those puppy toys / stuffed animals that mimic a heartbeat could help appease her when you're not right with her? |
Sweets, just now seeing this...sorry! I got Bijou at 9 weeks from a "rescue" (found out later she's the breeder), anyway I got Bijou a stuffed animal from Petsmart that heats up in the microwave to be a warm cuddly. That might help your baby too. It helped Bijou. She wasn't much of a crier though. My Great Pyrenees was a huge crier as a baby. He cried even when I held him. Some times the only thing you can do is ignore them and have them learn to calm themselves down. But that's soooo hard. My heart goes out to you as it's so hard to get over this adjustment period, but it will get better. Just try to give her more and more time alone so she doesn't make you lose those patience and think of this from her point of view...she's in a new place and her old family that she got to sleep with and be comforted by are no longer there. My yorkie puppy still cries and barks when she can't see us but can hear us. If I pick her up and have her next to me or on my lap, she quiets down. Perfectly content! I have had my baby for about 6 weeks. I am hoping eventually she will learn she can't be with me 24/7 by my side. LOL!!!! |
Thanks everyone for sharing experience and advice. The little one stays in her crate when we are not home and we put her in the x-pen when we can't watch her or we think the Biggie Smalls (the older dog) needs a break. She can always see us from her x-pen. The little one is making a tiny bit of progress. This morning while she was in her x-pen she did not make a sound. This was the first she has ever looked comfortable in there. When I went home to let her out a little bit ago she surprisingly did not cry when I walked in the door. She still cries much more than our Biggie Smalls did as a pup but she is making progress even if it is slow. I have tried my best to remind myself as she is whaling away that she is a baby who is still adjusting to her new life and than all will improve in a matter of weeks. My Biggie Smalls still wants nothing to do with her. He is not aggressive towards but he ignores her and he walk away when she is near. I hope soon they will be best buds and when she is older they can stay at home together cuddling while I am gone. |

Poor little thing, she is so very young and should still be cuddled up in her mothers paws. If she were mine I would be carrying her around with me all day. Damn and blast all breeders who let pups go at such a young age, sorry but I'm just really pi**ed off with some breeders at the moment! |

I got Pixie at 8 weeks and she didn't cry. I was home with her all day and held her a lot and warmed her bed at night. I guess you have to treat them like a newborn. She just left her mom and litter mates and is feeling lonely and scared. lots of love and patience and cuddling to make her feel secure;) |
Awww. I hate to hear of a little one crying all the time. Lucy didn't do that but she was 12 weeks old; so not sure if that makes a difference. Luckily, I work at home so I was around anyway. She did have to do some crate time while I was busy at work; but she didn't seem to mind to too much. That said, when she was ready to come out; she did cry and I knew she had had enough crate time. Yours probably has some adjusting to do; I would make her crate really snuggly with blankets to curl up in and with the snuggly toy mentioned above. Put some treats in there so she knows it's a good place to be. Good Luck. |

I wouldn't let her walk around freely or take her out places until she has all her shots. You don't want her to catch something accidentally. I've heard 9 weeks is way too young to let a pup go. I don't understand why breeders would send off a pup that young knowing it could be a health risk. Good luck with your baby....:) |
I agree with some of the above posters about those snuggle stuffed animals. That might help. Could you take her to the vet just in case something is wrong and that's the reason she's crying? I hope it gets better!! |
