Pee-Pad to Outdoors is Swithchigh Possible? Hi All! My 16 wk baby Biewer, Biranna and I have been lurking and have gotten great info, laughs and cries on YT. We have an issue than some may have dealt with. Bri cane to me pee-pad trainged - well, mostly. She is about 95%. I travel a great deal and plan to take her w/ me, so pads are great for hotels and airports, but at home I would really love her to go outside. She is going to be about 8 lbs and IMO, that is pretty big for indoor poops. I wou;d ;ove to have both, indoor and outdoor but I know that is the impossible dream. If I have to choose, I prefer outdoors, but am clueless on how to switch. Any help form someone who has actually done it (is it possible???:)) Thanks! |
It's okay for indoor/outdoor potty. Sydney does this and so does my parents' Yorkie Ginger. Both girls learned outdoors and indoors. If you want to switch, gradually move the potty pads toward the door you would like your doggie to use. Eventually, move the potty pad out the door to where you want your doggie to go potty. Again, this is a gradual move. Even if she's getting it, don't move the pads until she hits it 100% of the time. Then move to the next spot just ahead of the potty pad. Let us know how it goes! |
That's good advise about moving the pad, gradually, towards the door. It is not an impossible dream to have them trained both ways :). Mine go outside when I am home, and use the potty box or grasspotty inside, if I am away for awhile. You can train them to both. I would recommend doing a search on bell training, its a great tool for potty training outside  |
Thanks Kirby and Mary Kay. We have been slowly moving the pad as well as going outside hourly. I have tried the bell, but she wont leave it alone. How can I impress upon her that the bell is only for oustside potty? BTW, We never play during potty outings and if she does not "go" in a reasonable amount of time we come in without praise or treat. |
It sounds like you have a handle on things. As for the bell, I tried with Sydney, but she too kept wanting to play with it. lol If you dog needs to go potty and you know it's about time and she doesn't go, you are doing the correct thing by coming inside without praise or treat. No words at all. If you have a crate, you can put her inside the crate, wait fifteen minutes, and go outside again repeating, "go potty." Again, it sounds like you are off to a great start. |
Our dogs are trained to go inside and outside. They prefer to go outdoors but it's not always an option (winters are cold and they hate snow). We just gave them the command to "BE CLEAN" where ever we wanted them to go. We used a clicker and food rewards. The adults are very reliable and Teddy is getting much better (he's been tough to train, due to some urinary medical issues we think). So yes, you can do in and out for pottying. Good luck! |
