Yet another Potty Training Topic Hello all! I'm a proud mommy to a 4.5 month old Yorkie named Taco. I've had him for over a month now and since the first week, he's been awesome - I'd say he's had a 90% success rate on peeing on his puppy pads. I am indoor training him (we don't have a yard or access to one, living in a city on the 15th floor) and honestly, it's been great. Then we got him neutered. Ever since (for the last week) he's been peeing randomly around the house - not spraying but just squatting and peeing. His 90% has dropped to about 50%. It seems that he'll go on the pad when I'm watching him, but when I'm not, he likes to test his limits. He sleeps in his crate so I know that he can hold it for about 5 hours. How can I get him to go back to his 90% success rate? I'm home with him often but he usually just runs around the apartment (it's not all that big). Thanks in advance for any help/advice I can get! |
Welcome to YT! I have heard this before, potty training mishaps after neuter/spay. Perhaps surgery temporarily affects their ability to feel and control their bladder muscles. Supervise your boy as closely as possible. When he potties on the pad, praise him profusely and maybe give a small treat. Never stop giving praise. Clean the accident spots with an enzyme cleaner to get rid of the scent so that he won't be tempted to return to the spot. Hopefully Taco will be back to his good potty ways soon. :) |
Thanks for your response! I really hope so too. I've put out a few more pads around the house so that he can find one quickly - and been giving him praise each time he goes on one. It's only when I'm NOT watching him he tends to make mistakes. Maybe it's just a phase... |
