Bell training? We repainted the front door yesterday and bought a kickplate to put over the bottom of the door. Now we want to try to train Roxie to jingle some bells to go out instead of scratching the crap out of the front door and the surrounding moldings. I bought some jingly bells and tied them to a ribbon. I know not to hang them directly on the door knob, but next to the door. I don't really know how to start training her, though. Right now I have a baby gate up so she doesn't go scratch at the door, but it's a real pain, as it's blocking the front hallway. Anyone know how I can get started? Any help appreciated! |
We just started to train Winnie. I found an article regarding this by searching Google. What I did was rub some food or a hot dog in the palm of your hand and tell the pup to touch. They should come to your hand and hit it with their nose. I sat and did this for about 20 minutes and incorporatd treats as well. Then take your hand away and replace with the bell and tell the pup to touch and treat them if they get it. Do that for another 20 minutes. Nexttime you take her out make sure you ask her to touch and point to the bells. Right now Winnie will touch when we ask her if she has to go out but she hasnt caught onto doing it herself yet. It has been 5 days. We are off to a good start. Good luck! |
I decided to try the bells also because Mia, who is 10 months old, would just sit in front of the door and if you weren't looking and took too long, she would just do it there. I started with taking her out her crate and going to the door and saying, let's go potty and ringing the bells for her. I did this every time I would take her out, Let's go potty and ring the bells. She did it on her own maybe 4 days later and did it on and off. Now, a month later, she is really letting us know by ringing the bells every time she wants to go out. Just remember to always ring them and they will associate the bells with going outside. |
Hello We trained using the bell also. I used to take Nibbles out every 1-2 hours when he was in "potty training" status and whenever I took him out, I took his paw and rang the bell and opened the door and put him outside. If he would go, I would tell him that he was a good boy and gave him a treat. I kept doing it and on day three, I heard the bell ring. Now it's non-stop. He rings the bell when he wants to go outside to potty or play, well most of the time :) |
I have been wanting to try this also but wasn't sure how to get started. My 3 are at different stages but Hobbes will also go to the door and wait but if I am not in the kitchen he gives up waiting. Petsmart reccomended this with my female but I didn't take the time to try it with her. |
Bell training Hi, Jack uses bells to go outside he has been doing it for almost 4.5 yrs now. I started by making a long cord made of bells. I brought him over to the bells took his paw and rang the bells and gave him a treat I put a long string of bells on the handle of the sliding glass door. :eek:The funny thing is that Jack goes over and rings the bell when he wants to eat and play its really funny but he runs towards his food area when I go near the door.!!! lol I try not to confuse things I keep it simple. I pick him up and bring him back and take him outside . It worked and he has been doing it ever since. Now my girls Mandy and Lila are a different story |
We bell trained our little guy Ace. It was actually pretty easy. I bought some floral wire and bells and made a wreath out of bells attached it to a string and hung it from the door knob on the back door. We just rang the bells everytime we took him out and asked if he wanted to go out and within a few days he was ringing them all on his own. He was probably around 4 months old when we started and he is now over a year old and hasn't had an accident in the house since we started using the bells. |
I am glad to hear the bells are working for each of you. I bought the Poochie Bells months ago and began using them immediately. We have consistently rang the bells and said "potty outside" to the point that Duke will sit, look at the bells and wait for us to ring them , he does not want anything to do with them. I have tried peanut butter, treat rewards, lifting him up to hit the bells with his paw and attaching one of his small toys on the end of the ribbon....no reaction whatsoever except scared if I lift him up to the bells. Duke is 9 months old now and potty accidents are minimal, but then again I have learned to ask him to go outside before the accident happens. I wonder if I am rushing him outside to soon and not giving him a chance to ring the bells. ~Jessica and My Lil Duke :animal-pa |

Last time I kenneled my Cooper I had them put his bell in his crate (that backfired, since he rang it every 20 minutes to get out of the crate :D) |
The bells are hung on a interior door that leads through the utility room to the back door. This way the bells do not ring every time the back door is opened confusing Duke. I think I may try the "Tell Bell" next - it seems that he is scared of the jingle bells or the ribbon swaying on the door. I think it could be the bells since he has a rubber ball that has a jingle bell inside that he ignores also. I really like the Tell Bell concept. Duke is tiny and having the bell on the floor would be much easier to reach. Thanks for your input, hopefully he likes it. ~Jessica & Lil Duke :animal-pa |

I read about this too and really wanted to start training Oliver as I live in an apartment and want him to get used to letting me know when he has to go so I can take him down the stairs and out to grass (annoying I know!) I'm just wondering, is 12 weeks too young to start? He's still in potty training mode! :p |

We found a bell at Home Goods with a big button at the top that would be easy for Dharma to hit, but I think it's still too difficult. We are going to switch to hanging bells. Is it better to hang it on the door knob so she associates the sound of the bell when the door opens to go outside, or is it better to hang it next to the door. Would the bells hanging on the door knob confuse her if we are opening the door just to go outside? |

I started mine off at 3 months ringing the poochie bells and after an interim period of ringing the bell just for fun or getting me to come in there to play with her, she was trained in no time. I still love them!:D |
I just started today. But she seemed scared. We are going to start with doing the touch training and hitting the bell ourselves as we go outside. Then we'll replace our hand with the bell. We'll see how she goes. I took her paw and hit it and she seemed scared but we'll see how she goes with the touch training first. |

Love this thread. I just started with a bell also. Copper goes out a sliding glass door. I made his bell from a large plastic cat play ball. It cost me a dollar for two at the Dollar Tree. I threaded 3/4 inch ribbon through it and hung it from a cup hook I put in the wall beside the door. In one day, Copper got "ring the bell" when I pointed to it. He will ring it on command. And then I open the door. A couple of times he has rung it and looked at me. I let him out. I'm not sure we have made the total connection with potty everytime, but we are off to a great start. It has only been a week! I had heard yorkies weren't the sharpest, but I think learning the command in such a short time is pretty good. We'll see about the potty connection!!!:rolleyes: |
