Potty Training not working..(new)
 

I am new here and I am searching through this site for potty training for older puppies. I have a 7 month old baby girl named Lola...we have had her over two weeks. She does not want to pee/poop outside! We have looked at a couple threads on here that stated to be consistant and keep on her to go every twenty minutes-then 5 minutes outside then right back in again...into her crate or close to us until she seems to have to go back outside again to try AGAIN...every twenty minutes. Clock work. Nothing!
Lola looks around seems as if she is going to do 'something' then she does not. She will come inside and then w/in maybe ten mins she will pee in the kitchen....and then later in the day poop where we can find it!

Im so lost on this, she is so stubborn towards us but so lively and fuN!:confused:

Was Lola pad trained before?

I would try taking Lola out and keeping her outside until she pees or poops. If you haven't already, try taking a walk at potty time rather than hanging out in one area in the yard. When she goes, praise her profusely and maybe give her a small treat. She will learn that she needs to go outside, and always praise her when she does it correctly.

thanks , no she was not pad trained I think what the original owner said was that she used newspaper inside and outside took her w/the others she had ( bloodhound and wiener dogs) but over all lola was so small that the others pushed her around, hence I have her now...
I only see her pee and poop inside so I dont know if she truly was ever house broken!:thumbdown

Well, if she used newspaper at the old owners, than you might want to start there. Then when she gets that down again start to move the paper closer to the door you want her to use, until you can move it outside. She is just confused about what to do, if you change everything at one she doesn't get anything. Go slow with the changes from the old owner, she will learn, but not all at once.

Maybe she want's privacy :rolleyes:

Take her for a long walk, take a water bottle with you. She will have to pee shortly after drinking. That's when everyone will start looking at you crazy when you go nuts praising her for a job well done and a treat. Best treats I've found for training are the Yorkie Yummies from foxypups. There tiny treat and they love them. Good Luck!!

I had thought of the walk too today I was going to but I knew that my daughter would want to go too lol she loves 'em...
Lola didnt take to the paper on the floor here the first couple days ...they went unwetted! ( if thats a word lol)...she didnt touch'em and didnt go outside but did pee
/poop right about 12 inches away right in front of the cabinet /which above is where the coffee maker is & I step in it every single time!!!!

Oh no, not in front of the coffeemaker! ;) There is another method for potty training that you can try.

Buy some puppy training piddle pads. They are scented to attract the dog. On the first day, put 2 to 4 pads down overlapping each other and confine Lola to an area (one room?) where you have placed the pads. Put her on the pad and choose a keyword or phrase like "go potty." Do this after meals and throughout the day. She probably won't go right away.

If you see her circling, looking for a place to potty on your floor, bring her to the pads.

Supervise her as much as you can and when she pees/poops on the pad, praise her and give her a treat (I use one kibble). Really let her know that you are pleased when she does things right. Goes nuts, without scaring her. She will see how happy you are and she will want to do it again.

Don't criticize her when she does it wrong. Clean the spots thoroughly with an enzyme cleaner so that she won't return to the spots and want to potty there again.

When she starts getting things right with the pad, move it closer to the door. Eventually you can transition to the outside.

If you choose to go with this method, you can also incorporate lots of walks and more time outside with supervision/praise to speed Lola's understanding that you want her to potty outside.

Actually UPDATE : Hubby was out w/Lola this morning about 6am and she pooped
after circling around the back yard, she pooped right by one of our big trees.
I was amazed when he told me ( I was in bed til 7). SO! now t oget her to pee!

You have to look at her as if she is a baby and has no potty training. At 7 months old, she should not have free run of the house, she should be contained to whatever room you are in. Too much freedom is scarey for her, and she will never grasp training. If you plan to do outside potty only, than you are going in the right direction, taking her out every 20 mins, go for walks. Always give her a Positive Praise Potty Party when she does it outside and back it up with a small but yummy treat, I recommend using Peanut Butter Chips from the baking isle ;)

Also, they do regress during this as well :(

:thumbs_up This is a great suggestion by Maximo and I agree completely. We trained Rocco the same way on the potty pads at first (no choice, it was during February, which is very cold and snowy in Massachusetts). As of now he has had NO indoor accidents for over a month (he's almost 5 months old now). We've been working hard on the outdoor training now and he's really getting there...last weekend, he only went pee on the pad 3 times total, everything else was outside. So be sure to crank out the praise both for the pee pads indoors and potty outdoors, and never, never, never any harsh scolding for mistakes. ONLY if you see her do the pee or poop in the wrong place, then you can gently tell her/show her that she should do peeps/poops on the potty pad. I've actually watched Rocco do his poops on the floor then picked them up with a tissue and while he followed and watched I put it on the potty pad while telling him "potty goes here". Then he sniffed it and looked at me like "oh, now I get it" :D Anyway, good luck with Lola and be consistent, she will definitely get it.:)

Ive done the no no no Lola this is not where you go ...act. I have always done it ...right. My husband is the loud one w/the yelling at the dogs if they do pee/poop
in the wrong place. But over all ........they listen and go outide 99% of the time.Lola
she is doing ok but she does have reign over the house w/going where she likes but she will lay beneath me at the computer ...or on me while tv watching or while eating shes under my chair. Or she is in her bed!

I'm having the same problem, I think I'll try the peanut butter chips. I just spent 15-20 minutes outside with him. We came back in and within 2 minutes he peed in the floor. There are days that we go with no accidents, then days that we don't go without one. It's a hard thing to accomplish, and it's frustrating.

Louie is my 8 month old baby and I've had him about 3 weeks. I live in a condo in a highrise so I'm not able to take him outside as much. We are still working on the potty pads but outside seems impossible!! He hasn't gone out ONCE yet! We'll be out there for an hour, after he's had water and he'll just stare at me. When we go for walks I will take him to a spot where I just saw another dog pee and he will sniff it and then move on. I only use the words "go potty" when we're outside or near his potty pad. He seems so confused! We come in and five minutes later he's peed on the carpet. I've read all about praising them and going nuts when they do go outside so they learn but poor Louie hasn't given me the opportunity to do this!!

You can always try a "go here" type spray. I bought a bottle from petsmart for 3 dollars, when I took him outside I'd spray right next to wherever Rizzo was standing staring at me like "why am I out here?" he'd smell it at least with some interest. Then I'd spray a couple more spots, and we'd just stay outside until he finally went (I sat outside for 1.5 hours once just waiting for it to happen) as soon as he went I gave him huge praise and brought him inside (which is what he wanted anyway). After that, everywhere that I sprayed he goes to when we go out. And he gets that he doesn't get to come inside until after he does some kind of buisness. Occasionally he'll just squat down and look at me so I see that he's trying to do what I want, lol. He's a little character, but he's not totally trained to not go in the house either.

Enzyme cleaner
 

I found my enzyme cleaner at PetSmart and it's called Simple Solution. It's well worth it. My boy doesn't even bother looking in the same spot twice! (He still doesn't potty where he is supposed to but at least this helps prevent marking!):)

Deuce--thanks for the advice. I have a "go here" type spray from PetSmart, though perhaps I'm not using it correctly or not waiting long enough. I spray a little bit on his potty pad but he's not interested. We will try using it again on the potty pad and outside and perhaps waiting outside longer until my little one figures it out!!
