For those that paper train... I am having an issue with the girls peeing on stuff. Maggie is like almost 100% potty trained and Livie is like 75%. Pretty much Maggie always pees on the weewee pads but she will also go on anything else she sees on the floor-like if she sees a piece of paper or a rug, towel anything she will go on that too. So how do i help her understand the difference? Does anyone else have this problem? London also does this-when we visit ppl she has gone on their rug thinking its her weewee pad-but she has never gone on the floor itself-just on stuff. Am i supposed to tell them no when they do this, give them time out? What do i do? |
Interesting. I've only paper trained one dog, Jillie, and I haven't run into that problem. I have one pee pad in the house, and she uses it when she has to. Do you have the pad in different locations around the house? That's the only thing I can think of. When I gave her the freedom of the house, I placed the pee pad in one spot, and I keep it there all the time. I haven't tried using a pee pad in someone else's home, so perhaps I'll run into that problem too. As for what to do if she goes where she's not supposed to, if you catch her in the act, give her a "no: and carry her to the place you want her to go, either outside or to a pee pad. I wouldn't scold or punish beyond that. I've heard that when you make the punishment too severe, they just start trying to hide it from you. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Hopefully someone with more experience will weigh in. |
:aimeeyorkI have also paper trained Theo, as I live in the middle east region and it's often too hot for him to go outside during the heat of the day. The solution I've found that really worked with Theo was to use scent drops for each new wee pad I use and, in the beginning, after each time Theo went potty. You can get them at any pet store. That way they are attracted to that one spot to do their business. And yes, as was mentioned above you must keep the wee pad in the one spot. I have two in the house in each guest bath. Theo uses which ever one he is closest to at the time of need. I use this method too when we visit friends. It works wonders! Good luck! |
we have the same problem... we picked up all rugs and live on only hardwood floors :( |

I use a grass matt on top of a pee pad. Libby is good about using that. Zoe only goes outside and Mickey is my new guy and we are still working on housetraining with him. He does really good but likes to mark. But he is getting that marking is good outside, not so good inside. Maybe another week..... |
I too have some issues with Dallas..he is 8 months and he will go on the pad when we are around..usuallys misses when he poops...and if we are not in the room he go to the same spot on the rug in the corner and he know this is not the right spot because he holds his head down and goes to his bed and waits. I have been at this for at least 5 months. Any suggestions.... Dallas's mom |
Trixie goes on the peepee pads almost all of the time now. We have two spots we keep the pad...on by the back door and the other next to her xpen (she also has a pad in her xpen for when she is confined). In the beginning when we would catch her doing her businesss in another spot, we would give a good "no no no no no" and then place her directly on the peepee pad. She got the idea (although she did pee on the son's sweatshirt recently when he left it on the living room floor - serves him right though lol!). When she poos, most of it is on the pad, but she walks when she poos so sometimes it is off the pad too. Good luck! :animal-pa |
I haven't been able to use area rugs or mats in 4 years. I don't know why Lennie considers these pee mats. He has been paper-trained for the past 4 years and we just recently purchased the grass mat system. |
Don't give up.....Livie is still a baby girl. When Bella was a pup & I thought she had it down, I let her have roam of the house while playing, etc. That's when the accidents happened, so I would start the process over of confining her to one area. She would get excited about playing or roaming around. When the accidents happened, I would say "no", pick her up, & taker her to her pad. Remember, if an accident happens, you need a good product to rid the smell or they will go there again, they don't know any better.:( I bought a product from my Vet & it is Great! The Equalizer carpet stain & odor eliminator. You can find online too. She finally got it & now we travel & she uses her pad with no problems.:) |

I limited Pixie's space until she was trust worthy. we gated off the living room until I felt that she was ready then we gave her the run of the house but kept all the bedrooms shut. Now she has full run of the house and is doing well. If I did catch her in the act I would say No Pixie and bring her to her pad. whenever she would go on her pad and I would see her do it I would praise like no other!! |
