Crate Training
 

I have a 2 yr old pup and she's peeing on my bed, some told me that crate training can help me, do you think it's still effective for her? and how long should I train her?

I'm not sure about crate training. I use a playpen or xpen with a puddle pad on one end. I still use it if I have to be gone more than a few minutes. It doesn't usually take long for them to figure it out, but every dog is different. maybe someone more experienced can help you.

we started Hammer out in a playpen with a puppy pad on one side.
Once he was large enough to jump out we moved to a crate.

Just being consistent with the SECOND he/she comes out of the crate you go immediately outside.

it took us only about 3 weeks to really catch on. now we leave him outside the crate but enclosed in my bedroom. he knows not to pee in there, its where he sleeps.

How can I get my yorkie to go into her crate herself?
 

She doesn't go into the crate herself, when she does it, she run back out. What should I do?

I would put a treat or two in the crate periodically. Leave the door open and the puppy goes in there looking for a treat. Over time he got used to the crate and enjoys being in there. Another thing that I did is put a treat inside the crate with the door closed. He went bonkers for a short while trying to get inside to get the treat. I opened the door to let him get his treat and he was a happy little camper! :)

Some like toys, some like treats. You know your girl best. Decide which motivates her the best. All ages can be trained.
Give her a reason to want to run in there. Put something in there like a kong with p-nut butter inside. A favorite chew toy. Regardless, may sure you acknowledge the command "inside" or whatever you say. Then reward by giving her the reward
Put something in there she wants. Reward her for going in there.
Bait her= give her treats to con her in it. When she goes in, give her the treat. Treats are only to be used for training. Make sure they are well sought after treats to expect her to work hard for them. Make it a game to her at the same time, "yipeey, you win" reward, reward, reward. Sooner or later she'll go in there expecting a reward.

To get Tanner to like his "playpen" every time we put him into it we gave him a treat...now all we have to do is show him a treat and he runs into it. You just have to remember to always give the puppy a treat and eventually they will be more willing to go. Also praise them when they go potty in the right place, they learn faster when you reward them. Also remember never to put them in the "playpen" for punishment, you want them to want to be in there and not see it as being in there as a bad thing.

I wanted to make her crate as her "house" but she seems to never go in there herself.

chloe was crate trained just two weeks after bringing her home from the breeder. chloe now takes the crate as her "den" & her own room & will never make an accident in there. she also sleeps in there at night so that she doesn't get herself into trouble while i'm asleep. i get so little sleep as a student that when i sleep, i am completely knocked out. so for her safety, i have her sleep in her crate at night.

at first, i didnt have anything in the crate. no crate pad, no cushion, etc. then i would "lure" her in with a toy or a treat and when she was fully inside the crate with all four legs in the crate, i praised her or gave her the treat. i would do "fun things" with her while she was in the crate and make it a game. after a while if i tapped on the crate, she would run inside and wait for a treat.

the worst part wasnt even getting her to walk into the crate herself. the worst part was getting her to stay in there without going ballistic. at first i closed it, let her see that i had closed it, stayed by the crate. i didnt say anything to her, no praising, until i opened the door to let her out. i praised her if she was quiet and calm. i never opened the door or comforted her if she was crying.

after a while i would do five minutes and stay by her side. ten minutes while i read a few pages of a book by her or something. if she was crying, i'd wait for a few minutes for her to calm down. i still didnt comfort her while she was crying in the crate.

then i started leaving her for twenty or thirty minutes while i walked to another part of the house where she couldn't see me. she went crazy a few times. but after a while, was okay with it. so i left her inside the crate and went out of the house for thirty minutes the next time, then an hour, then two and a half. etc.

now she gets it! i think it helps to have them sleep in the crate. for me, i know it did.
