Yes, you can teach an older dog new tricks. The best thing is to find out their favourite treat and use that as rewards. It's probably easier using clicker training so that they know they've done the right thing instantly. Start by just doing a click and then giving a treat until he knows that the sound is good and he gets a treat. Then start with 'sit.' The easiest way is to hold the treat in one hand and the clicker in the other. Make sure the dog knows the treat's in your hand and then say 'sit' while moving the treat hand over his head so he should go into a sit position while watching your hand. As soon as he sits, click and treat. He should get the message in no time. From there you can go on to lie, stay, come, etc. It might take a little longer than with a puppy but it's very possible if you are consistant and do regular, short training sessions. |
