Private or Group Sessions??? I am trying to decide between group training classes or private training sessions for Trixie. I am concerned about her being around much larger puppies/dogs with owners who may or may not be watching them carefully. She also has not gotten her bordatella shot...and I was planning on not giving it to her. The trainer said it was important for Trixie to meet other dogs and people to socialize her. Now I don't know what to do - private or group. Anyone have any thoughts???? :animal-pa |
It's really up to you, i personally prefer private classes. Me and my dog can learn and progress at our speed and spend time on the things that I find the most important. Socialization is very important however, I take my dogs to a lot of places and even the dog park, so I feel I have the socialization down on my own, however for people who find it harder to find places for their dogs to interact with others using group classes can be very useful. Good luck in whatever you choose and just remember the most important thing is that the two of you have fun and use the opportunity to create a bond. |
I think group sessions are better overall. :) I've personally never taken them as I've trained Jackson myself but he's been well socialized and constantly around other dogs (dog parks, pet stores, other places, etc). I plan on taking a group agility class soon. I think socialization is really important so if they're not going to get the socialization otherwise, group training classes are perfect. :thumbup: Private training is usually only needed if you already have a problem dog. A group class with other toy breeds would be ideal, IMO. With our class at Petsmart Ruby was by far the smallest dog (even among the puppies) and was intimidated by the labs, shepherds, etc. You're in a confined cubicle and she would cower under my chair or insist on me holding her throughout our class time. Now, once we were allowed to go out and practice in the store for like leash training, greeting, etc. Ruby was less intimidated. But in the close quarters of the training area, all we could do was listen, watch and then go home to practice. |
I agree with you that a group with all toys or small breed dogs would be great, but this class is open to all size dogs. I guess it will have to be private training and I will socialize her with my friends pooches...although I may have to wait to introduce her to Molly the goldendoodle..at least until Molly calms down - she is still a puppy herself! :animal-pa |
We did a group class - dog sizes ranged from yorkie to a bernese mountain dog :eek: lol. It worked out just fine. They were all puppies, all supervised and all on leashes. For the most part, I kept Bailey on my lap during the discussion sessions - and we spread out for the activities. |
