Help with Grooming and Hair One more thing, It is very difficult to brush her because of this biting everything, everywhere, but I try daily to brush her. Her coat is very cottony and course in appearance. She is also matted a little. I have been scared to pull too hard on some of these knots. What do they feel when you are trying to get a knot out? Do they feel like a human when someone is trying to brush out knots. Does anyone know a good detangler or coat conditioner. I am currently using a pet oatmeal shampoo and conditioner. She has to complete her immunizations before she can go to the groomer,which will be in May, if her health continues to do well. Any help with managing puppy hair would be greatly appreciated. |
Welcome to YT. Tugging on hair mats can be very painful for a dog and tugging too hard can damage the hair follicle and skin. You have a big challenge if your pup is biting. However, if the mats accumulate on the dog, the mats will pull skin when the dog moves. Hang in there and keep working with your pup, getting her accustomed to you handling her. Take your time, move slowly, and encourage her with a soothing voice and treats. (My boys know that after grooming they get to go on a big walk -- their favorite thing in the world :)). If possible, use fingers first to pull apart tangles. Then carefully work with a comb. Try putting a little cornstarch on the mat to give the hair more "slip." Don't get the cornstarch wet. Another option is to put a little conditioner in a small spray bottle and then fill the remainder with warm water. Spray on a good brush and then carefully work through sections of the coat. I have had a lot of success with BioGroom Silk Creme conditioner and this brush:  Amazon.com: Isinis Hair Brush * Made In France:... Some mats are so bad that they will have to be cut out carefully with scissors. Don't try shaving off mats with an electric clipper. Good luck! |

Hi, My two would bite a little when I first started brushing them, but I tried to brush them everyday at least once. Now they love it....they just come over and lie down. Try brushing her every day. Maybe while you're sitting on the couch watching TV. Just start off softly so she thinks she's getting a massage or something. Look in her ears and teeth, brush her a little more...etc. I would just cut out the mats under her arms if you can. Maybe she just needs to get used to it. Good luck :) |
