Leash training I have a 3 month old yorkie named Bri and she HATES her leash. She's really tiny ranging about a pound, so i'm wondering if maybe she's too small? We have a small harness that she's okay with, but as soon as the leash goes on she has a fit. She literally sits and stares. I feel so bad!! Any advice would be helpful! |
I did not start leash training until Pixie was about 5 months. I did put a harness on her and walk her in the house first so that she got use to it. I walked her around the yard before we ever ventured out any where. It takes time but I think she might be a little young to start. I guess it depends on the dog and your patience. always praise when walking on a leash and encourage the good behavior. don't let her bite her leash, tell her no and take it out of her mouth. good luck |
Welcome to YT! I honestly don't know what is a good age and or weight to start leash training but I'm sure you will get a good response here. I started my girls at about 5 months because I felt comfortable with their size and stability. My new pup is afraid of the leash so when I can keep and eye on her I will put the harness and leash on and have her just drag it around the house to get used to it. Thanks! It may be too soon. She did okay after working with her on and off for about 15 minutes, then she ran for the door and sat there! She does fine without a leash, but I worry about her getting loose! |
We are leash training also. Fiona will be 1 and she has never been on leash. She never needed to until now. I had some luck letting her drag it around for a while then walking slowly through the yard. When she walked without me pulling I acted like she had just spoken to me. I went crazy! She seems to respond to that. I also tried treats but she is not food motivated. Still working on it but I do wish I had started earlier with her. |
Our little one didnt like a leash either. So while we were inside we kept his harness on him then after awhile we would attach the leash to him and constantly take him everywhere with us in the house.. even while i was sitting at the computer i had him on a leash for awhile. he got used to it real fast :) He is only 5 months old! now once his harness goes on he knows the leash is next so he just sits and waits :) |
Is she the only dog, my puppy is 11 weeks and we have two other dogs so she took to it right away the first few times, then she got smart and wanted to be carried we just were patient and put her down and started walking with a little pull on the leash. Now she walks pretty good. The first few houses she gives us a hard time, so I carry her a few houses away and then walk back. Maybe that will work. |
No, she is our second baby! We have a one year old Chihuahua who has to be on the leash when we are outside or he'd run away! She's followed him in everything as far as potty training goes. She tries to ring the bell just like him, but the leash wasn't happening! I gave her today off, we've had bad weather! It'll be pretty again tomorrow and i'll try again! Thanks for the words of encouragement and advice! I really hope she starts liking it! |
Lucy's not a big walker either. She doesn't mind her harness - but if I try to walk her down the street - she only wants to go a few houses down - then right back home. Now if Ringo (our Westie) is with us; she will keep up with him for however long he walks. He loooves to walk. I note that Lucy walks much faster on the way home - like a horse back to the barn! I wonder why she doesn't like it. We try to take them to different trails - see different people and smell different smells . . but she is just not that into it for some reason. I really think she would rather be home in her house and big yard than out in the world. She hates to go to Pet Supplies Plus too - which our other dog loves as well. Our little homebody! |
Bri loves people and she will run to anyone that will even look at her! Which is the main reason I am so adamant about getting her to walk on a leash. I'm glad she is sociable (her big brother the chihuahua hates people) but I think she's a little too sociable! I believe I've figured out the problem though! I'm terrified to use her collar to walk her on, so we've been using a xx-small harness. However it's WAY too big! I'm searching like crazy to find a smaller harness, hoping that it'll help! |
On the size thing, I found one on Amazon, kinda expensive but Kasha's only 2.4lbs ... so we had a hard time with size too. http://http://www.amazon.com/gp/prod...ef=oss_product Dogs, especially terriers, are never going to be happy with leashes. My first Scottie used to get out of her collar/leash and run away to chew it to shreds. It took her until about 6-9months to realize that chewing it didn't stop us from getting a new one. :) Point being, these little ones are super strong willed. I let Kasha chase after my other Scottie in the house with her leash trailing behind her. Seems to work. Hope that helps!! |
I think we've turned a corner! She's done great for 2 days! I've learned if I put clothes on her the harness isn't big enough for her to come out of. It's still big, but she's learning!!! |
I got my precious puppy at 3 months old and 3.5lbs, at about 4 1/2 months, i began taking her for walks (after she had most of her shots) and for a while she was walking me instead! Until i met another dog owner who told me to make the leash short so that she learns that I am the "pack leader" and that we are walking together at my pace. At first she would just sit and not move, but after being dragged a little bit (at his advisement, lol) she got the hint and began walking. She is 7 mos not and seems to understand for the most part that when the leash is short, we're walking together and when its long, its a privilege for walking properly.
