paper training I have ordered the recommended book-Potty Training in 7 Days; however, it will be couple of weeks before it arrives. So, I need help paper training my 5 month old pup. I have been at home and deligently working with him, but it doesn't seem like he is getting "it". As long as he is inside his gated area, he goes on the paper, when he is allowed into the main areas of the house (with my supervision), he goes whenever and where ever he feels like it. I tell him "no" take him to the pad to try and finish, but he is usually already done. Also, after I allow him out of the gated area, I move the gate so he can freely come back to the paper pads ,and I also personally take him back to this area frequently to guide him in the pottying process when he is out of his gated area. Any ideas out there?:eek: |
I have the same thing with allie , I have her gated, but yesterday I opened one to "trust" her and she peed on my sofa . She goes on her pads 99% but I gave her that little extra freedom....she is 9 months :) |
Well, I don't feel so bad. Bailey is 5 mos. old and I have had him 4 weeks. A trainer once told me with another dog not to use papers in the house as they confuse the dog. Don't know if this is true. The other dog was eventually totally house broken, all I recall is it went on for a very long time. She was a toy as well. So here I am, repeating it again. I am just taking him out a lot. Every couple of hours. My son is home so he can help. I was out at 12 midnight. From almost day one, he does nbr. one outside. He smelled where the other dog went and we return to the same spots. His other business has been harder. It hard because you keep the dog in one confined room, and so he can't go to the door. Initially I confined him in his xpen at night. In the morning I found he was pooping in his bed. I couldn't figure our what to do. So, I let him stay on my bed and voila, no more accidents. I guess its just trial and error. I figure when he doesn't eat as much during the day, it will be easier. He is still a baby. I think he knows he is not supposed to do it in the house because he tries to hide in a corner. |
I'm no expert, but the "book" I downloaded from Amazon said paper training isn't really housebreaking a dog because they are still going inside. Think about it -- I did. What are you going to do? Bring a bunch of papers and pads to a friends house if you visit? Not sure why it works, most of the time, but I take Ruger out a lot, and put pads down where he has most of his accidents inside. Lately, when I'm too lazy to get up when he gets up, he's been going on the pads. Like you, I have rarely caught him when he's going where he's not supposed to, so I kinda gave up on that one. But, after about two weeks he started to let me know when he wants to go out, either by osmosis or whining or barking. It's a long way from perfect, but it's way better than it used to be. BTW, today it was blowing snow sideways and we still went out, so maybe I'm the one who's getting trained. :-) Good luck. |
