Aggressive yorkie! How can I stop my 6 lb. male yorkie to stop being so aggressive with big dogs! He went up to a large lab-mix today and started a fight! Luckily I was there to stop it but my dog ended up with a bite mark on his back! The larger dog was on the other side of my van and I didn't see him. I usually pick Jac up when big dogs are around. What should I do? Jac is a big dog in a little body. |
Im not sure what you can do. But I do know these little ones think they can take on any big dog dont they? I always make sure theres no dogs around before I let mine out. |
socialization and constant supervision....... also being wary of your suroundings Maybe you have a friend with dogs that you can sort of make a "playdate" with  |
He's fine with little dogs....it's the big ones that he gets aggressive with. I knew the big lab was on our property so I was leashing Jac up by the van before I took him out to pee. He ran under the car and they were fighting before I could get to the other side of the van! It happend SO fast! If he wasn't on a leash it could have been much worse. I yanked on the leash to get him away from the lab and he ran and hid under the car. Didn't know he was bleeding until later. :( |
For his own safety, I think you are going to have to keep him on a short leash. Obedience classes and/or a consultation with a trainer would probably help. Yorkies, as a breed, don't seem to realize how small they are, do they? Has he been neutered? |
Leash, Leash, Leash  |
We always have to keep Guy on a leash just for this reason - He's very agressive toward big dogs. He's tried several times to take on the akita that lives across the street from us - This dog is more like a horse than a dog! She's also a big teddy bear, but we don't take chances. Guy thinks he's MUCH bigger than he really is... |
Gee ~ does everyone think my dog was running around loose or something? He WAS on a leash but ran under the van where the other dog was that i DIDN'T SEE!!! |
the only thing i can think of is neutering. and nothing you can do will make them think they are the size they are. he is your he-man, your superdog, your PRo tec ToR! plus maybe he needs a tough german shepard body guard for when he digs up your garden. sorry to hear about the scare. did you contact animal control? |
He got neutered @ 6 months...just think how aggressive he would be if he wasn't! Good thing he's such a small dog! I think he suffers from little dog syndrome. :) |
I have 2 suggestions, but I'm not sure how receptive you're going to be. They are: 1) obedience classes 2) a shorter leash It does seem to be a breed-thing that they don't have a clue how small they are. Joey thinks he's big stuff, too (and he certainly is, in my heart!). |
Well i've got the opposite Sparky wants to hump everything and every dog he sees!!!!! So which is the worse?? |
