help my yorkie bit a male friend coming in the door 1 Attachment(s) Hello- new to yorkie talk here! :) So glad to find these forums because I have a big problem. I am absolutely in love with my 2 year old yorkie-mix, Wally(he 1/2 poodle in him but looks/acts very much like a yorkie) but he is VERY over-protective of me. I am at the breaking point now because last night he bit a friend of mine (that he wasn't familiar with) HARD on the leg as I was letting him in the house:(. Wally is just about the friendliest dog to people he knows well (family and close friends), but to strangers he is absolutely a terror :thumbdown. Barking and attack mode-it is very hard to control him when he gets like that. He doesn't like people or kids that he doesn't know. I am afraid to let kids even get near him!!! It is too bad because he really is an amazing dog to people that he knows. Note- he is totally fine with other dogs. What do i do? :confused:this isn't the first time he bit. he tried to get a jogger once and also a male neighbor that approached me that he didn't know. he has been to obedience class and does fine in that setting but as soon as we are back home/in the neighborhood his possessiveness returns. He is extremely smart and knows about 10 tricks so I know he can learn but I think I haven't found the right way to deal with it. I have had him since 8 wks old and he has never had bad experiences with people. sooo lost, confused, angry at my dog:confused::confused::( |
Is he nuetered? If not having him Nuetered may help. |

Also, when you have people come over, you should put him in another room, let your people come in and relax, then bring him out on a leash. And immediatly start to make him do your commands, reward him with a yummy treat for doing his commands, and if things are going well, let your guests reward him. IDK - maybe that would work. You have to distract him, get him "working" and want to be rewarded! Check out: dogwise.com They have some really good books |
yes he got neutered when he was around 6-7 months. |
I watched "The Dog Whisperer" the other day and Caesar addressed this very issue. Put your dog's harness and leash on him. Then, have a stranger to your dog come to the door. Have him ring the doorbell and knock. When you let him in, pull back on your dog's leash. Keep doing this until he gets the idea and praise him when he does. It may take several times, but it worked on the show. They did it over and over and over again. Good luck and I hope this helps. |

You're probably going to have to go this route: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...l-trainer.html |
make sure you freind rings the doorbell and kindly greets you and your fod SLOWLY Good Luck! |
I'm not really sure how to guide you here but I can suggest that you socialize him more. Take walks down a busy street with him close by your side. Do this a couple times a week even for 15-20 mins. It's you and him only in the house and he's is being over protective of you. Can you drop him off at a day care for a day during the week? He needs to be with more people IMO. Buddy on the other hand loves people. Even stranger's who come into our home, he barks, sounds like a guard dog but once he sees I"m ok with them he's their best friend. Thank heavens. My trainer suggested I take him on walks in the village where there may be other dogs walking. He has a problem with large dogs in the neighboorhood. She suggested I show him, off our grounds, that large dogs will not harm him, hence a different neighborhood. I thought perhaps it may work for you only with people walking by. Dosen't hurt to try. I think he needs to be with people more. When theres only you and him, like me and Buddy, I think the bond becomes stronger because they rely on only you. We are also joining classes with other dogs next month. Maybe that would be good for the two of you as well. Mixing with different dogs and different people may be good for him too. |
I am so glad this thread is on here. My husband has been off work for a couple days & alone all day with my 3 1/2 yr. old yorkie and now Toby is so protective of him...I can't even get reach for the remote if Toby is in between us....it's almost crazy..I don't know what happened !!!! and I don't know how to fix this. IT"S SCARY. thanks for any & all info |
