My guy won't walk on a leash
 
Hi all! I am new to YT and am now addicted!! I've had Lincoln since Thanksgiving. He is going to be 3 in June. His old parents never had a collar or a leash on him. I have gotten him used to a collar and a tag...it took him FOREVER to stop trying to eat the tag! I've put a leash on in the house and let him walk around he is fine. Once I pick up the leash he puts on the brakes and won't move. I've tried holding treats in front of him, but he still won't move.

Any suggestions?

I hope you have a harness on him. Yorkies should only wear a harness bc they can get a collapsed trachea. I started using a leash on Pixie in the house first bc she felt more secure. I would use it walking around from room to room and then eventually we did around the yard. I would use a treat and praise her when she was walking on the leash. Good luck

A collapsed trachea? Really? I'm obviously newly owned by a yorkie and didn't know this. He does have a collar, but like I said, all it's good for is holding his name tag! :)

Anyone know of a good harness? The ones at the pet stores all seem like they would rub him raw...

Hello! Yep.. my Yorkie is larger at 12lbs but he still wears a harness. His neck is pretty sensitive. I like the Puppia harnesses (Amazon.com: Puppia Soft Dog Harness (Mesh) Red...Amazon.com: Puppia Soft Dog Harness (Mesh) Red... ) and YT member chattiesmom makes great silk step in harnesses (you can find her in the Yorkie products for sale section).

Petsmart and Petco sell ones similar to the Puppia's as well. :)

I also agree with poster above... try to get him used to the harness/leash in the house first. Let him drag it, walk around with it, etc. Then do the same outside. Bring a favorite toy or favorite treat to encourage him to walk. I think with some practice and patience (and calm and assertiveness! ;)) he should get the hang of it.

just to make sure you understand, the collar is fine for his i.d. tag - just not for walking. for walking you want him to be on a harness. i tried several before I found one we really liked. it's pretty warm where we live during the summer, so the larger mesh/fabric ones that cover the chest were too warm for my Maddie, the adjustable step-in type style are what work the best for us.

depending on where you live and what stores are available to you, I have found them at Wal-Mart and Target in my area.
