Rescue yorkie training--help! I have had Maggie for two weeks now - wonderful Yorkie - acclimated to home, teenagers, and other dog right away except for ONE thing. She goes outside regularly but pees in the evening and during the night on her bed! I put pads down no luck - does not use them...I thought they would not go where they slept. The worse thing is she will move from her bed and go to the other dog's bed (a Lab) and do the same thing there! Fortunately, our Lab does not seem to mind. |
I would consider it essential to use an ex-pen with piddle pads (I use washable ones because my Pommie rips paper ones) when house training a puppy or a rescue. Unless you are able to keep an eagle's eye on Maggie, she needs to be in the ex-pen. I have an 11 yr. old rescue Yorkie and to this day I don't trust her unless I can have her right beside me. As for peeing during the night.....when I was training mine I would set my alarm to take them outside. I also try to not allow my Yorkies to drink tons of water before we go to bed....especially my 11 and 12 yr. old Yorkies. One other thing, make sure that you use an enzyme cleaner where she piddles....on the floor, on doggie beds, or on blankets. I use Nature's Miracle and I'm quite happy with it. Blessings for giving a rescue a chance at a happy life. ~Joanne~ |

BTW~welcome to YT :) |
How old is she? Has she been seen by a vet yet? I would suggest, if you have not already, that you take her to the vet and take a urine sample with you to see if perhaps she has a urinary tract infection. Good luck and welcome to YT. :) |
Was she recently spayed ? sometimes their bladder is weak for awhile after a spay. |
Rescue yorkie training--help! Thanky ou everyone for your suggestions. I took her to the Vet yesterday, she thinks it might be incontinence due to her (8 years). She is in good health except for teeth - she stimated it will be about $300 -- to fix those -- anyone know anything about Pet Insurance? |
I doubt you will get pet insurance on an older pupster, but you could try. The teeth absolutely need to be done. Did the vet do any lab work on her? I would definitely want that done...she might also have kidney issues. It is always good to do lab studies so you have a baseline. Did you adopt from a rescue? If so, they should have done labs and you should have a copy of them. |
Rescue yorkie training--help! Ladyjane I have scheduled the appointment for her teeth -- I can get Pet insurance but it is very expensive and don't think the teeth will be covered since the Vet has already identified the problem. |
