Won't settle down Hello all! Toffee just turned 7months and I wanted to know if this problem was normal/common and what I can do to rectify the situation. Toffee always bites my finger, I tried the bitter apple spray which sort of works, I tried pushing away at his nose, I tried taps on his bum and giving him time outs. He's always back for more. Also house training has been going well for him in terms of going outside. But it's been raining nonstop in NY for a while and winter is comming. I'm trying to train him on the wee wee pad, this is no good as he'll by chance go on the pad or pee on the carpet or look at me and whine to go out. What's a good solution/training method for this? Wosie is almost 4 months, and she nibbles on us constantly if we let her. We have to ALWAYS tell her while we are holding her, "no bite", and if she nips a bit hard, I hold her mouth shut and FIRMLY tell her "no bite" and I put her down and ignore her for at least 5 minutes (which is really hard on me, as I love her sooooo much!). She is beginning to understand, and is slowly getting to the point where I can hold her and she won't bite all the time, just sometimes, lol. They are puppies, yours and mine, and they will bite to make their teeth happy. It's so hard for the people in their lives to be patient with it, but that's what we must be until we both come to an understanding about it! I offer her toy alternatives, and tell her "good girl" in my high congratulatory voice when she bites the toy, and "no bites" in my growly voice when she bites me. I just know eventually the light bulb over her head will come on! Or at least I am very very hopeful!! Good luck! Persistance and consistency is the key, I think. |
my two pups are about 7 months old now and they have pretty much outgrown the nibbling on fingers thing. when they did use to do it, I just took my hand away from their mouth and would pet their back. |
This is some really good advice. I must try that with Toffee! I try the closing his mouth and saying no (I didn't try no bite) but he'll get hyper and start shaking his head like mad and try to bite me more. Giving him something else might help too! Anyhow, any advice/personal experience will be help you guys! =D |
When Gucci was younger she would do the same thing and I would say no in a stern voice, she outgrew that biting stage she now is 15mts old. The only problem I have with her is that she snaps at me in the evening she is laying in her comfy bed in the family room and I will retire her for the night in her room in her crate, she starts snapping and she won't let me pick her up. I don't know how to handle that. As far as training I had trained Gucci to go on wee wee pads, and during the summer she was trained to go outside also. Like yourself I live in NJ and it has been raining non stop for the last eight days. She has been having number two accidents and she knows she is wrong. I have to retrain her on wee wee pads for the winter will be here. Hope this helped... |
Replace your fingers with something else. Garrett was a nipper, loves to bite on your hands, I started giving him something else that was acceptable for him to chew on, a ball, rubber bone, one of his stuffed animals, and would also always say no to him when he tried to chew on my fingers, took a couple of weeks, but now he just brings me his toys so that I play with him, no more biting my hands. The pee pad thing for me was easy, I always have a pee pad available, so Garrett can use them if I don't get him out or if I am gone. One thing I did do at the beginning was at first he would not use the pee pad, so I used newspaper which he was trained to use by the breeder, then I gradually moved the pee pad in, first with the paper under and around it, then I reduced the amount of newspaper until there was like an inch around the pad all the way around. FInally got rid of the paper and he was trained. |
I have found that pushing my finger further into his mouth, my boy is very naughty, stops him because it is unpleasent. He is only 7 weeks but I think he is getting it. My girl doesn't bite near as much. |

My Lexy is 3 now. She comes and gets my finger when she wants something. She grabs a finger when I've been gone awhile. She's quite a jumper and when I come in she hits the recliner arm and starts chewing on my finger. But never hard. Hers is just an attention thing. However, we have a neighbor who is afraid of dogs and doesn't appreciate being "bitten." The command No Bite works well. For any command that she is not wanting to obey, I grab it. One hit usually stops the behavior immediately. Incidentally, it works on the neighbors' dogs too. When they stick around the fence too long and keep her yapping, I grab it and zap them. They turn tail and run for home. :) |
