Won't sit on hard surfaces! My puppy won't perform simple commands such as sit, lay down, and roll over on hard surfaces. We have hardwood floors and when we first taught him tricks we would put a blanket under him so when he rolled over he wouldn't hit his head on the floor. (He use to slip a lot when running around and hit his head with a big clunk). That was a BIG mistake! Now he only sits when there is a soft surface. When we tell him to sit, laydown, or roll over he would walk to his bed or anything soft he can find and perform the trick. When I give him commands without anything soft nearby, he just stares at me. I would like to now how to retrain him so that he would sit on hard surfaces. |
Hi & welcome.... good question ~ My Harley does the same thing. She knows many tricks/commands. Sit, stay, chill (laydown), bang bang dead, spin, sit pretty, high five, praise Jesus, speak, crawl, kisses and walk. HOWEVER, will only do them on carpeted surfaces. I too have all hardwood floors with the exception of our area rug in the living room. I haven't figured out yet how to get her to do it on the floor....sometimes I think maybe she doesn't like lying down on the cold surface. Who knows! Maybe someone else will be able to give some constructive input as we're in the same boat. :) |
helps IMPRESSIVE!!!!! How do you teach roll over? Castor Pollux can sit and lay (my list is very short lol) but he's smart. how can i teach roll over? I tried putting the treat near his ear to get him to roll (I think i rea that method online) and he'd get up grab thh treat and lay back down. I want him to do more stuff bc he's a quick learner... but IDK what else to do. We got kicked out (asked nicely to leave) puppy classes because Castor Pollux is a little Napolean complex with other dogs and I'd pick him up, the trainer thought dogs belonged on the floor and she obviously didn't know that the perfect place for Castor Pollux is in my lap lol but from the 1st 2 days he learned sit and lay and his name (really smart pooch) I want to teach him more... any help? and back to the original thing-- Castor Pollux won't do anything for anyone else but me, not on hard floor, and if never ever outside. |

The way I taught my puppy to roll over was to roll him myself. I don't know if that is the conventional way but it works! Since hes so small, I take one hand and turn him over. Then I would say roll over and give him a treat. He caught onto it after a few times. |
hardwood My sisters yorkie won't walk on hardwood floors! She has a sunken den & got the halls & the stairs redone in hardwood. Lexie stops at the wood. She finally got little strips of carpet to put on the two steps up & two steps down just so Lexie would move. |
Uni won't sit in the kitchen unless the rug is there. But other places she is fine. weirdo. She won't roll over without a rug, it probably is uncomfortable, since she's so thin too. It's just more comfortable for them to sit on a rug. I think as you are still training, make it a positive comfortable experience. Once they really got it down, then have them do it without the rug. But until then, keep the rugs in place, why not? |
Interesting. Thor is fine about sitting on hardwood floors, but hates to Down on them. He also doesn't like to Sit outside on a damp sidewalk. For me, the key is persistence. For instance, before I feed Thor, I used to have him Sit (on a hardwood floor). Now I tell him Down, and I wait until he does it. If I have to tell him ten times, I tell him ten times, but we don't move on until I get what I want. He's generally quicker to respond if I say, have a flossie, or something he really wants. I don't think I'd ask him to Roll Over on a hardwoord floor, I think that could hurt. |

omg that sounds like Bandit. When he took Puppy classes, all of a sudden he wouldn't sit anymore on the floor. We thought it might be because he was a little sore after being neutered, so the instructor put the only blanket she had down (it happened to be HOT PINK), so he then performed all the commands. From then on he wouldn't do any tricks on that floor without a blanket being put down for him. Today he'll do tricks on hard floors if it's not cold, and if it's cold he'll do the "hover sit" lol.
